Horrible cold start sound

I hear a loud rattle, crank sound. I’ve heard it could be that vanos oil check valve or timing chain guides. Some days it’s louder than others but it’s been going on for 3 days in a row now on cold start. Anyone ever experienced this?

It's typically the chain tensioner(s) but without a video no one will be able to tell you.

The cold start clunk (rattle) noise is normal for the S65 engine .
When *NOT DD* during cold start we can hear the loud rattle crank noise (same situation here)
Over the years I saw it fixed , but only once . It was the *Vanos-Gears* and it was a PUMA-case fixed under BMW warranty.

In this thread (with videos of the noise in #15) you can read pretty much everything about the S65 cold start clunk noise => https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=996069

Note: Keep in mind the S65 Vanos-Gears are not cheap !

Same here, mine does it every single time if not driven for a few days. It's the car's way of complaining we should be driving it more lol

Huge appreciation for the wealth of knowledge on the forum.

I really figured it was a normal sound but it's nice to see this reinforcement..

Oil pressure building in the vanos system, the rattling noise is from the sprocket.

Hmm mine sounds like rubbing some empty soup cans together for a few seconds. I don't know what that slap sound was...

It was rod bolt failure. One bolt on rod #1 had backed out and ended up in. The pan with no damage. I guess i got lucky with that factory extra defect. 🤦🏻*♂️

When my wife hears this noise every so often she always gives me the look of, is that normal? Then I just give her the look back like it is a race car, those things are expected.

I'm on 3rd set of RB's@160,000. I drive my car daily and love it non the less 4 years later. I have noticed I only hear vanos/valve chatter on cold startup if my car has sat for 3 days without use which is rare. It has done this since 23,000 on its first set of RB's and it would do it 3 days from now if I didn't drive it. I'm on the fence whether it's the vanos gears or simply one of the hydraulic lifters that bled out while sitting stagnant for a few days. Once oil pressure builds it goes from collapsed to filled. Noise lasts for 1-2 seconds. I love the S65.
