Interest? GGC BMWCCA HPDE at Laguna Seca Jan. 5-6 2013?

Cross posting... The Golden Gate BMWCCA is trying to gauge interest in holding a weekend HPDE school at Laguna Seca on January 5-6, 2013. See this thread for specific details:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742008

Would like to know what everyone's interest levels for those dates are.

I posted on your Facebook page, but will post here too.
I'm DEFINITELY interested. It would totally make it worth it for the SoCal guys to come up for a 2 day event vs the one day events. It's just too bad it's during the Winter for the wife, who will like come too.
She has NO INTEREST in Buttowillow/Thunderhill, WillowSprings or Fontucky.

Now, if you guys could find a way to get back to Sears Point, that would be awesome too.

There's definitely no lack of desire for that. But it's the cost that holds things back though - with the CCA format, pricing winds up around $800-900 for a two day weekend at Sears Pt, not cheap!

Drop her off at either Carmel or Monterey bay and she'll be good for the rest of the day. Maybe not for your wallet.

You mentioned $600 on the other thread. So, it is around $600 or closer to $800-900? That's a big difference...

If it's $600, I'm sure you'll have more interests.

Sears Point (aka Infineon until recently) is not the same as Laguna Seca.

It's going to be closer to $800-900 IMO. Auto Club Speedway down in So Cal winds up being a $600 weekend for 2 dayer, and Sears is more expensive to rent than ACS.

Tack on hotel fees and gas, you've got a $1,000+ weekend.

I may be interested. I'm a little worried about wear/tear on my brakes/tires. Given that it is a driving school and not like a racing/open track day, would brake/tire wear be less (or between AutoX and a normal track day). Thx

I am certainly interested. Laguna Seca sounds like a great idea. Going to have to take a couple days off of work to make it manageable, but that's ok.

I know it's a more expensive track than most, but I assume the facilities and track condition will be better than most spots as well.

I did multiple days on stock brakes and tires with minimal wear, but I tend to conserve them pretty well, while still have a great time.

I'm in, as long as we are allowed to have windows up if it gets wet/rains. No problem driving in the stuff, but don't want to have the left side of me body and the car interior soaked. CCA event earlier this year had some light rain, but we were still required to have windows down.

So, can windows be up if it is wet?

I would consider it if some of their evaluation practices have changed. They have great instructors for the most part but no formalized evaluation system for the instructors, a practice we have in the midwest.

Last time I went, they do secret grading of the students and do not share their "records." Sort of hard to improve if they will not tell you what to work on.

Also when it rained, they let people run windows up.

Not be be a debbie downer but there will be like a 80% chance that it will rain if you hold an even in January at Laguna Seca. That is the reason the track is priced so cheaply from November to March.

(Cheap is a relative term, mid summer track days for one day is like $350)

Best way to learn how to drive is to do it in the rain

dagolfpro: the $800-900 is my guesstimate for what it would cost at Sonoma/Infineon/Sears Pt. Laguna should be around $600.

radsmd: When it rains, regarding windows up/down I'm not sure who determines it, the track, the club, or a combination. In general in the past, when the rain is heavy enough, windows up have been allowed. Instructors don't want to be half soaked either!

Merked M3: Yeah, we know January isn't the best time of year weather wise, that's another reason to hesitate with this date. If we had a prime season weekend date, it would be a no brainer. But given the limited availability/likelihood of getting a weekend date during prime season, the question is do we take a weekend with poor weather probabilities, or wait for a weekday (which fewer people can make) but with good weather?

LittleBlue: We do hold west coast (multi chapter) ITS programs for new instructor training/evals, happens about every other year. Might not be as formal a process as in the Midwest, maybe we're just more laid back in California.

While there's no feedback form or formal written info given to the student, the instructor SHOULD be telling you what to work/improve on. If your instructor is really lacking in providing feedback, I'd say please mention the issue to the chief instructor, it isn't supposed to be like that.

Last time there was a two-fer with CCA it was about 600. I think the price is good with the instruction. I doubt selling this event out should be an issue. GGCCCA needs to host some more local track events. Since the old guard stated they would not use Infineon due to the price, Laguna is the only event they run. Two days is better than one and I stand by my assertion that rain is the best track time.

Historically (years ago), 1 weekend at Thunderhill, 1 day at Laguna, and 2 weekends at Sears. After getting priced out of Sears, the past two years we had two weekdays at Laguna, but this year there was only one, so nothing to fill the long gap locally.

I'd guess that another Laguna weekday could have been a possibility, but the challenge with weekdays can be getting enough instructors who can take the day off from work.
