CA emissions failed

I went to 3 different smog places today to try and pass emissions testing. All 3 shops said that their computers could not communicate with my car. the last shop said that they could communicate with Gen/Global OBD2 but will not communicate with Bar OIS OBD2. Has anyone had this problem? any advice?

My CEL is not on, ECU is stock.

Do you have an Awron installed or any other device that connects to CAN?

Not with my M3 but with my 335i, I had a 3rd party company install the PPK software and the Mass emissions software will not communicate with the ECU. To remedy it, I would need to go to BMW and have them reinstall the software with an authentic version.

My car which apparently has an ESS tune on it from a previous owner is showing this when I look using the Torque app.

Does anyone know if this will pass California smog?

Says heated catalysts not available but it also shows catalysts available

It shows a number of things on the drive cycle incomplete, but does that matter in this case?

You need to go back to the stock map in order to flash. THE tune is most likely blocking those monitors from being ready. After that you need to follow the BMW drive cycle and you will be good to go.

Thanks Kevin

I think heated catalysts are electrically heated cats which BMW doesn't use on the e9x M3? Is that correct?

Car actually passed emissions just now. I don't really know for sure it has an ESS tune. If it does I know you can tell them you DO have cats so maybe in that case they don't suppress anything from the o2 sensors? Last owner had full exhaust on it though so I assumed it would need tune to avoid CEL. Well whatever, it passed!

Just tried smogging my car, their computer wouldn't communicate with the ECU. Tried multiple times and I'm suspecting my AWRON. Will disconnect and try again and report back. Has anyone experienced this before?

It's definitely the Awron...it's blocking any communication via the OBD2 port. Unplug it and you'll be good. I unfortunately have to do this too everytime I need to do anything successful via my OBD2 port.

Cheers, I somehow successfully flashed back to 240e with the awron installed so it never registered it would be an issue but now I'm thinking about it, it wouldn't connect with the ignition on. Glad I didn't F anything up. Thanks again for confirming my suspicions.

You don’t have to unplug the Awron. Just put it in service mode. You hold whatever steering wheel
Button you programmed it to for like 15 seconds and it will go into service mode . Then the obd port will be ok.

Are you sure? Don't want to waste my dood's time again if it doesn't work? I guess I could prep it to unplug and try that. Thanks
