Question Sooo if the E60 M5/E63 M6????

Sooo if the E60 M5/E63 M6 is basically the same motor with just 2 more cylinders. Why does it seem to cost so much more to maintain?? then its 8 cylinder M3 brothers?

It has a more complex and problematic vanos system and instead of the DCT trans it uses the older SMG which is also more problematic.

basically this.

The SMG part can be solved buying a manual version.

The S85 uses high pressure oil for the vanos, kind of like the S54. The S65 switched to a much more reliable low pressure oil.

Regardless, the S85 is a life altering experience, so if you can swing it... I say do it. Those two extra cylinders cost more but are worth more as well

you are a lucky bastard. A good friend also has both and they are incredible

I'm first on the list with two friends that have 6MT E60s.... so I'll have one someday! Although with two E9Xs and a F80 CS I'm not complaining too much

NEVER Enough, do it!

How do you like all that Alcantara on the F80CS and M-DcT is mandatory with that bundle, did you get one of those smoking deals on a 'left over' ?

That is also an amaze-baLLz machine in its own right. Just has its own SoundTrack.

I really like the alcantara. I have the M Performance V2 steering wheel on the E92 and E90, so it's nice to have it in the CS as well.
Last weekend I put 800 miles on it, it's nice to drive an M3 for long distances. My E92 is more of a garage queen and the E90 is a track car.
I got a pretty good deal and will use it as a secondary track car, so I'm happy with the DCT (like the E90) and have the E92 6MT whenever I want to drive stick as well as the Mini. The best part of the CS is it uses the GTS hood which clearly has a giant M in the underside, it's really beautiful.

If one of the M5s becomes available I'll have to sell the X5 or the Mini. Can't have 6 cars, that is just dumb.

The CS sounds pretty well in isolation, but drive it back to back with the E92 that has a loud exhaust and the karbonius plenum like I did last week and it isn't even in the same ballpark.
Turbo engines can sound purposeful and loud but they all sound like complete shit if you're near a NA engine. I've tracked the C63S, 997 Turbo, whatever and they all sound like puke.

I've also driven the F90 M5 back to back with the E60 and it's the same story. No comparison at all and I'll choose the E60 10 times out of 10.

It's also an extra 20 bucks for every spark plug change, an extra air filter every time you get an air filter, an extra four bearing shells every time you do the rod bearings during an air filter change, and it gets 30-50% worse fuel mileage

Exotic car engine in a biggish relatively cheap to buy sedan? It's awesome. But you better be ready to do the exotic car maintenance dance once in a while.

I don't have any experience with the E60 but from what I heard, half of the fun of driving it is feeling the smg kick you with each shift. What do you think?

I try to resist the E60 because I know I will want to stroke it... I need to find the money tree!!

Speaking of the devil, last night my friend with the E60 tells me he's thinking of selling it. We even agreed on a price... 4 M cars at once may be a tad much!

If I had to pick an E60 M5 to own I'd get an SMG just because of the novelty of it, if I'm getting one of these it's because it's going to be a period piece and I'm going to drive it around with a big moustache and a golf hat. I like SMG transmissions, once you remember to drive it like a manual without a clutch, it's a lot of fun and you feel like you still have to sync up with the car to drive it properly, which is A Good Thing

But the other reason is the S85 seems to fall "off the cam" a lot worse than the S65 if you let the revs drop below 6k and the 2-3 ratio gap in the 6speed is the same as in the E9x - boggy sometimes

And I would also be terrified of money shifting it

Also the maximum attack shifts are indeed amazeballs

The e60 M5 in manual form... to me, is a true GT sedan and a Gents HotRod. I can't quite explain it.

I don't worry about future SMG issues, and the BE bearings and ARP bolts were just done at 48k, .. the original bearings barely showed any wear.

I replaced the front thrust arms with MonoBalls from Turner, which sharpen the turn in significantly, without intruding on the peaceful cabin. 10 cylinders come alive with plenty of thrust to suit my style of driving.

Whenever I want more muscle car sounds, I hop into the e90.

The SMG is very slow at low revs with up top it's very fast and brutal. If you also swap manually it can be driven smoothly.

The thing is that I've been hearing all about how 'engines are made for the SMG/DCT' since the stone age with the E46M3. But the E46, E92, E60, F8X all seem better with the manual.
The E60 6MT might sound quaint with it's suboptimal gearing and only 500hp, but it's also pretty light, so if you do high speed pulls it surprises plenty of people

You and me both, brother. I will definitely buy an e60 for the stable once I reach certain career milestones. And yea, a stroked s85 is a thing to behold.

Just sold my 5.5L e60 M5 after buying a house. Needed to be responsible and my e90 M3 is more special to me after many years and mods.

V10 felt like a supercar engine, hard to describe, but it has some character the S65 doesn't.

SMG on S6 is violent, DCT could never shift that hard.

SMG was fine for me - NEVER drive in automatic mode, and I'd pop it into neutral when I knew I was coming to a stop to avoid any slight lurching.

Congrats on the house. Did someone local buy the M5?

Thanks - I shipped it to Nashville. The brother of the guy I bought it from purchased it. Also, I just dropped a lot of cash on nice detailing equipment - I'm sure your SS2 could use some love

As much as I love the sleek sleeper look of E63 M6, there is something naughty and nefarious about a 4 door sedan blasting your eardrums as he passes you on a track.

Love it. It would be interesting to take one on track, I know I would if I had one... I would not be able to resist

I dare say it has the best chassis dynamics in M5 history including the F90. Weighs slightly less than E39 yet turns in so much sharper even with the "heavy" V10.

Agreed. The F90 feels super impressive and would scare the living hell out of people in 'sports cars' at the track, but put MPS4s into a E60 along with new suspension and it won't be far behind
