My god, I should be surprised by the misinformation and gobbledygook in this thread. But I'm not.

First, conflating the yearly flu shot with childhood vaccines is ridiculous. The efficacy of diptheria, polio, MMR, rotavirus, etc has been proven. Period. Any parent who does not have their children immunized by DTaP, MMR, and IPV should be charged with child endangerment. It's the height of stupidity and selfishness to ignore all the science and risk the health (and mortality) of your children.

However, the flu shot is different. Unlike vaccines like MMR, DTaP, IPV, or Hep A/B, the flu shot is a different formulation each year and both its effectiveness and safety can vary.

Even as someone who has had an extremely serious adverse reaction to a pandemic flu shot, I think the anti-vaxxers are the 21st century version of the flat earth society. The science is the science and it's pretty clear: immunization works.

The shot with adjuvant is for seniors only any other flu shot besides that doesnt have it. Its purpose is to stimulate immune response in elderly who dont generally generate much response on their own. Talk about misinformation.

Further, the adjuvant that is added to the yearly flu shot for the purpose of boosting the immune system has a risk of triggering autoimmune reactions that the flu shot alone does not. While the science on the flu shot makes sense, the risks of the adjuvant do not to me. Especially as the risks are not group defined. I've had an autoimmune reaction to the adjuvant in a yearly flu shot and, obviously, will never have one again. As I get older and the risk increases, if it ever reaches the point where I should have the shot, I'll have the "pregnant women" version because that's the adjuvant-free one.

If you are going to have a flu shot, I strongly recommend that you not have the standard, adjuvant loaded, version. The risks of radiculopathy, MS, NMO, and GBS are low, but not remote. But, even as someone who has had an extremely serious adverse reaction to the flu shot, I think the anti-vaxxers are the 21st century version of the flat earth society. The science is the science and it's pretty clear: immunization works.

Actually, you're right and I stand corrected. My understanding was a couple of years out of date. 2017-2018 flu shots do not contain an adjuvant. My adverse reaction was to the H1N1 vaccine in 2009 which was universally adjuvanted except for at risk populations (like pregnant women). Although that was essentially a flu shot, it was for a pandemic influenza so it appears to have been unique.

I did lots of research into flu vaccines back then (as you can imagine) but made assumptions about adjuvant use since. Thanks for pointing it out and I've edited my original post to remove the misinformation.

That said, I stand by the rest of my post about the criminal lunacy of anti-vaxxers and that a flu shot that has different formulations each year has a different risk profile than historically proven vaccines like IPV or MMR.

Flu Season started in October, haven't gotten sick yet. One of the symptoms of the vaccine is that you might get a mild fever FYI.
