For those selling tires, just some food for thought
Here's a couple of thoughts I have had from looking through FS threads of tires or wheels+tires that I'd thought I'd pass along from someone who has been accused in the past of being a wheel/tire whore:
1. If you are selling tires, break down and buy one of those cheap tire depth gauges from Advanced Auto or Autozone. It costs next to nothing and certainly gives a more concrete depth than showing some photo of a penny in the thread. 2. If you bought your tires for $1000 and ran 500 miles on them, don't expect to close to new prices. The subsequent buyer can't confirm you drove down the block or 5000 miles just by photos, can't get any meaningful warranty coverage if there is a problem, and has minimal recourse. 3. If your tires have 3-5/32's of thread left and you're selling with wheels, they are nearly worthless in the scheme of things in that they may have some wear left but may not be the tires the buyer wants, costs the buyer more $$ to ship the wheels, and will cost $ to be dismounted. 4. If you bought the tires when they were $1200 a set and now they are discontinued and cost $700 a set, selling a set used for that price makes no sense. 5. Shipping tires is about as easy as taping two tires together (minimizes the number of packages) securely and going to your FEDEX store. You can take all this with a grain of salt since I'm just another guy who has bought and sold many sets of wheels and tires over the years. Back to your regular programming.

Some good points and tips in here. Thanks for writing it. It needs to be said.
Too many people have unrealistic expectations about how much they'll get for used tires. Whether due to pure laziness or an attempt to scam others online, there should be no excuse for actual and accurate tread depth measurements, good pics and reasonable pricing based on the amount of wear from new and usable tread depth remaining. |
