Exclamation Parking Garages in Manhattan

Hey Guys,

Are there any good parking garages that are covered or underground that allows you to park the car yourself?

Thanks.

I commute to NY and have my own parking garage space on Park Ave i pay monthly.
Like every other parking garage in the city, 80% of cars in my parking garages are all high-end, from Porsches to 430s and 458s and bently. These owners bring their own bumper guards, front and rear and even sides. No matter what they say and what they claim to cover, parking garages will NOT be responsible for any damage they make, and they do make some serious damages.

To put it short, even if some garages are "known" to be good, don't trust them. You never know WHO will end up parking your car, or WHO will be moving around your car, if your car will be sent up to the roof floor via elevator, etc.

If you HAVE to bring the car into the city, my best advice is to go to a "big" parking garage, tip them 5~10 bucks separately and park it in the front and NOT send the car "inside" the garage or upstairs/downstairs. Parking "front" usually means parking right by the pay-box office or the pay-machine. It is safe because your car will most likely stay there and also because the car's right by the worker's office. Some parking garage lets you just take the key if you park there. I did this several times in NYC and Boston.

I think the hippodrome is the only place that allows that.

You cant park in a garage comfortably without having a relationship with the staff and knowing how their operation works. Once you've established those two things, its a lot easier. My garage knows me, knows my cars and takes great care. I also return the favor. Its a 50/50 shot without that. Good luck.

Only 2 that I know of is one at 42nd between 9th and 10th (where I usually go during the auto show) and the robotic garage on Baxter St in Chinatown. I can't trust anymore valets after the last time they scratched up my bumper and they will not claim any responsibility and will drive the s*it out of your car in the process. If you have to park at a valet, at least invest in some bumper wrap guards before going there, even then though, the sides of your car aren't protected and they squeeze cars in their lots pretty tight so an accidental tap or over zealous guy trying to get in the car next to yours and might leave a door ding. If you're going there just for a night and depending where you are, its probably better to just find a roomy parking space on the street with plenty of room between the guy in front and behind you and not near a big apartment complex entrance where taxi's tend to drop off people and usually swing the door out without really caring if they hit the car that's parked there. *sigh* and my girlfriend wonders why it takes me an hour sometimes to find parking.

Just out of curiosity, how much would a monthly rate be for a typical garage in Manhattan? Not a dedicated space, of course. Just 24/7 access to a garage.

Welcome to NY prices...that being said a lot of garages go for much more than those prices too.

Are you looking for a one-time while in the city or a permanent monthly spot? As mentioned, there are barely any self-parks in the city and personally I would have loved to use the Baxter garage someone else mentioned but it's not possible given where I live (http://www.automotionparking.com/baxter.php). The problem with garages is the high turnover and also the people you take care of are not always the ones handling your car. All it takes is one bum that is new and you don't know to damage your car.

BK, where's your garage uptown? Is the self park only for monthly or is it for everyone?

Would be curious how far uptown as well. What are the other drivers/cars like in that lot?

The garage is self park for everyone. It is in the basement of 3333 Broadway but the entrance is on 134th street off riverside drive. It is run by MPG which runs several garages in NY. As for the cars/drivers its pretty mixed. Several nice cars but nothing exotic and quite a few that have been in the same spot for ages. That being said its relatively cheap, close to public transportation, and there are several spots with columns etc that allow you to keep your car away from others. If you guys want more info let me know.

I might be interested. I'm looking for something monthly and I'd only be using my car 2-3 times a week MAX. Sounds promising.

Shoot me a PM with more info. Maybe you can hook it up for a fellow forum member

Good place and really big, I used to park there when I lived close by. Now moved down to union and have to pay 400 for a spot at icon parking but it's really convenient connected to the building
