BMW's warranty will far out last any concerns!
I would wait until DCT comes out, even if it is Fall '08, but from what I have read it will be May 2008!!!

Granted the same thing could happen with the engine. However, DCT just adds another level of concerns.

Lucid Im off topic, but my general concept is to let them work the bugs out of the software before I buy. I have confidence in the hardware (the transmission itself) I'm just concerned about the interface with BMW electronics and there always sseem to be adjustments/tweaks for the first year. I don't expect a 335i fuel pump type failure, but we won't know until it's been out there and tested.
Start of production for the MY2006 M6 was March 06. Start of production for MY 2007 M6 was Sept 06. I just expected the M3 to follow suit. I'll wait til the model year change no matter when it is. |

SMG II was a $2400 option. I don't expect M DCT to be less. I'm guessing in that range. The US M3/M5/M6 all have SMG "Lite" with a worthless launch control. I'm expecting the US launch control of M DCT to be worthless again. They just don't trust the US. Up until this year, VW DSG had no launch control in the US.

Great thread, again fantastic news. I am just about as pleased as I was shortly after warming up to the overall design, shortly after Geneva.
To all those pondering the M-DCT: WAIT. It will be worth it. This is the single option you can get for the car that will make it both faster and easier to drive fast. Who doesn't want the performance? Who doesn't want an automatic at least sometimes (and a really bitchin automatic at that)? Many that know me know I have been almost "preaching" M-DCT ever since day one. I guess I feel a bit vindicated now that BMW has put 20+ pages of flowery marketing around what those in the know already knew and that everyone is now jumping on the bandwagon. On reliability: There can always be begining of production problems. One simply has to balance their desire for things NOW vs. the very small risk of some fully warrantied shop visits. DCT software has very likely reused a lot of SMG software and that makes that part of the system more mature. The dry sump lube system with 9 liters of fluid as well as the emphasis on cooling - that the system was designed for track use both sound very promising to me on the reliability side. This transmission or close variants of it will make it into CSLs, other Ms and across the enitre BMW model range. It offers all the best of a MT and and an AT and with simple packaging and software changes it can be totally changed in character, performance, comfort and price. The point here is that BMW and Getrag likely dumped a lot of $ into R&D, testing and quality assurance which was justified by the eventual broad scope of application for the tranny. IMHO I think the wait is worth it (waiting beyond 6MT, that is) and waiting to "let others work the bugs out" is needlessly conservative. JMHO, based on some facts, some speculation and definitely my desire for the car with this tranny, ASAP. |

Since the DCT uses a wet clutch setup there may be fewer concerns with cluth wear, unlike SMG.

With SMG you can keep the car in any gear at any revs desired. You can also downshift two gears if desired.
Does anyone know if that's possible with this new DCT gearbox? (you can't do it with VW DSG gearbox). |

One would assume, yes. No reason for the software to behave differently than SMG (other than differences in shifting itself)

Why is 7th gear direct drive (1.000) in the MDCT, while 1.000 is 5th gear on the manual, and 6th gear on the manual is 0.872? Does that mean a MDCT car will be reving higher at any given speed in 7th gear than a manual car in 6th?

BTW: I am glad they did put a longer 7th in the car. No need for the car to be buzzy on the highway. |

.2 seconds quicker? Nah, I'd rather shift the old-fashioned way.
