Folding Mirror Issue
Has anyone has their driver's side mirror act up like this?
My quick fix is to close the mirrors, open the mirrors, and then stop the mirror at the driving position location. |

I have been texting with my BMW mechanic and he said the part is not covered under CPO and costs $700. Keep in mind he has not seen the issue or car with the mirror acting this way. |

That happened to mine once after the mirrors were folded in and I started driving and pressed the fold out button. It folded out too far. There is a "home" position that can get offset somehow inside the mirror.
Reset the mirror home position using the following procedure. 1. Fold the mirror in using the power fold button on the door switch block. 2. Grasp the folding part of the mirror and fold it outward manually. The mirror housing will disengage from the mirror base and will now be in the breakaway position. 3. Operate the mirror via the power fold button. The mirror will now fold out past the expected end stop. 4. Operate the mirror via the power fold button again to fold the mirror in. When the mirror is fully folded in, the motor will continue to run until a clicking and/or popping sound is heard. This sound is the mirror housing resetting its position. 5. Fold the mirror back out, using the power fold button to ensure it has folded out to the correct position. Hope this helps. It worked for me. |

This happened to me on both sides a few months ago, after trying the above method to no avail, and not wanting to pay what bmw asked for two new motors, I pulled the mirror caps off and snipped the wires going to the mirror motors.
Still have dimming, still have mirror glass movement, just stopped the motors. A bit ghetto but I never used this feature anyways |

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I'm struggling with this on my passenger side mirror. The provided solution is not working for me.
Can someone help troubleshoot with me or provide different perspectives? I folded both mirrors in with the power button. Then I folded the passenger mirror out with my hands until it popped/clicked into place, about 3/4 of the way to the original out of alignment position (like the OP's picture). Then I hit the power fold button again and the driver's folds to the appropriate spot while the passenger folded all the way out again (no pop). I hit power fold again, and they both fold all the way in (driver's sounds like it keeps winding, but doesn't pop). Then I hit fold again and the passenger went all the way out like the OP picture. I did fix this once, but I can't remember the exact sequence. It involved disconnecting the battery after folding to a certain position for each mirror and it seemed to re-center the housing's "home" position. Appreciate any advice! |

This happened to my 335. I had to replace the mirror frame. Remove tweeter…two nuts….unplug old frame and remove. Take out the mirror and painted cover for the new mirror. Reverse for install. Keep the old frame for its pan & tilt motors for future. There is no tab or stopper that stops the mirror at home point. Some times you can break the mirrors break aways (towards car) and press the button for the mirror to re-catch the breakaway point and it will return to the proper home point but that never worked in my case. I had to press button to fold in and then press again to fold out and I would stop it at home position myself until I replaced. When these little “hardly used” things fail I become filled with rage!😆

Well, after watching several youtube videos to understand the cause behind the mirror losing it's "home" position, I was able to resolve it fully with a rather non-invasive approach. No wire cutting and only a tiny pin hole drilled through a spot that isn't visible.
There's a spring that is supposed to push a pin out to stop the mirror in the appropriate position. With corrosion and dirt, that spring gets stuck and stops pushing the pin out. So you just need to clean off the spring with some WD40, and here's a great guide for how to get to it without taking the whole unit apart: In order to resolve that, it's fairly easy to take a pry tool and get the outer cover off without breaking any tabs. Then take a T10 (I think?) and unscrew the inner cover (2 screws) before prying it off gently. From there, clean the mechanism with windex/wd40. Use a 5/64" drill bit directly above the pin as shown in the attached image. My hole may have been a tiny bit north of the exact pin location, so try not to go further towards the mirror than I did -- I suppose there's some luck involved. There's solid metal that you're drilling through and then you feel it push through freely for a 1/4" or so and stop there. After that, put wd40 in there and grab a tiny drill bit to push in and try to get the spring/pin to move. After doing that a few times (as well as some wd40 at the bottom part of the unit), you can feel the spring release appropriately. Then put it to where the home position should be and hit the power fold button to fold the mirrors in. Hit the power fold button again and it should stop at the appropriate spot! |

Nice work around. Wish we knew this when I had my 335. Fucking thing went and I replaced like I said.
