Apple CarPlay/Android Auto Retrofit

We've got a few AVIN threads going but I haven't seen anyone discuss this Apple CarPlay/Android Auto retrofit solution:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Afte...892855099.html

It does not add a full Android interface or replace the OEM screen like the AVIN units do. I'm mainly just looking to add Google Maps and Waze to iDrive and don't need any of the other Android features so it looks like this might fit the bill.

Has anyone tried this?

I've been doing some more research and I think the JoyeAuto retrofit is the exact same thing as the Unichip retrofit, as discussed here:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1423013

Rumor has it a wireless version is in the works which I would be much more interested in than the current wired-only version. I'm also hoping they add support for the car's OEM mic rather than using a separate mic for CarPlay. If those two features come with the next release, I'm in...

Wireless carplay would be awesome! I'm more aiming for something with carplay that can be reliable as my daily Civic's Apple Carplay.

Damn, this looks great! Thanks for sharing OP, Waze is the only reason I even want to mess with my CIC. If this works well, I'd be thrilled.

Definitely been thinking about this. Apparently on special for AU$375 tomorrow, might take the plunge.

Agreed, would be great if this were wireless and avoided using a separate mic and aux in for the audio. I'd be in for one as well.

Sweet. How difficult is it to install one of these. I'm definitely interested. Following.

Is it reliable for mapping?

I have a CarPlay dongle for the Android head unit in my work car and while music and phone is great, any time I use any map app the audio stutters.

Also does it provide enough power to function when a phone isn’t fully charged? I had to put a Y cable to supply power from two USB ports to make mine work.

I’m thinking of sticking with my plan to go the Android headunit route. In my work car I use CarPlay for audio, podcasts and phone while I run Waze or google maps directly on the unit. Works brilliantly, and has the benefit of not tying up my iPhone display with the same content.

Mine is a Unichip device. It has been reliable so far and has worked flawlessly. There are no signs of delay in terms of navigating through the interface and the audio has never had an issue. Powerwise, it supplies enough power to charge the phone, but it is fairly slow. Steering controls work great and I love that I still have my CIC available so I can check for faults, TPMS etc.

Thanks for the info!

The Unichip device provides its own mic correct?

If it is charging slow, do you think its running under 1A?

When are you in carplay, and does the iDrive controller move the idrive menus while you are in carplay?

It does have its own mic provided. It is a cheap little mic but it gets the job done for me. I ran my mic into the steering column which is where the factory E93 mic is. (I think E92 has it on the overhead console) It is not noticeable at all and I haven't had any complaints about audio quality. You are free to use whatever microphone you want that is 3.5mm (If I recall the connection correctly).

I will test the voltage and amps and compare to the standard apple chargers when I get a chance. I will post results here.

In Carplay, the iDrive Controller does not move any menus in CIC iDrive. Only Carplay is affected by the inputs.

And it looks like it's only for CIC. I just bought an Avin 8.8" because I have a CCC system.

hopefully it actually charges the phones. I noticed a lot of the android units do not supply more than 500mA to the USB port which is far below required by today's modern smart phones.

I had that problem with the car play dongle I bought for the Android unit in my other car. I bought a Y cable that supplies power from a second port.

My dongle wouldn’t even work if my phone was under 90% or so.

Man, this is the stuff no one mentions when they do ACP from their phones haha.

Thanks for the heads about a passthrough cable. Hopefully this ACP module doesn't need this.

A friend of mine installed this.

Notes:
-It plugs into the AUX for audio. I have not heard 1st hand how it sounds but friend says BT sounds better which is perplexing to me!
-It doesn't seem to put enough power to charge the iPhone. It looks like we need to use one of those dual USB ports to gain more power.
-Idrive controller works as intended.
