E92 M3 vs M2 Competition

I have to say I have been pretty critical of the M2 but the Competition model is pretty intriguing. The car should be a monster performance wise and the interior is much upgraded from a base M2. If the exhaust tone is better should be one hell of a car. Also looks like it has an optional CFRP (dealer installed tho so kinda scary).

Whats the opinion? Would anyone consider getting rid of their E92 for an M2 Competition?

M2 Comp is what the M2 should have been from day one. S55 engine and some proper M interior features (namely the seats).

Agreed. If the CFRP was just a standard feature it may be a unicorn right now.

We're up for the 2nd next allocation at my dealer. I'm not selling the E90 M3 though -- into year 6 now with it and it's here for the long haul. I finally parted ways with my garage queen E39 M5 recently after over 14 years, so the M3 has inherited its status I guess.

The M2 Comp is going to be my wife's car replacing her E90 330i we've had since new 12+ years ago. It's going to be Sunset Orange, 6MT, slicktop. We've not been interested in any post Exx series BMWs, and are only mildly interested in this one. If it's not a "real car", and doesn't have excellent steering feedback, etc, I figure it's in such demand we can unload it easily after a few months without losing much.

I tired to get her to consider a DCT in it, but she was onto my game too easily (i.e. she would have to put up with not enjoying a manual all the time while I would get to flog it on track or an autox with the DCT 0.2% of the time ).

All ready set for coding off active sound (fake exhaust noise). S55 should be a beast in this nicely compact format chassis.

M2 competition is going to be one hell of a car, however don't expect the sound to be great like the S65. I've yet to hear an M3/4 I liked. That said, I've heard some current gen M2s I enjoyed.

Yeah I've owned both the F80 and the F82. The exhaust was always the problem. The OG M2 sounds much better but I think it's turbo setup that causes the sound profile. Im wondering what this will sound like.

The S55 sounds rad. You just have to fiddle with it a bit. No it’s not a V8. Yes the S54 in everyone’s favorite Mcar sounded broken too, so did the S14 and the s38 sometimes.

Even crap V8’s sound good but most other engine configurations don't. It's rare to get a bent-6 to sound good, and I've owned I6 BMW's my whole driving life just about and still don't really think they sound "good" anywhere close to stock, just better than a 4. Don’t see what the big deal is almost every e9xm owner on here has fiddled with the exhaust to get more of the good noises. The s55 just needs to be treated differently. A big single exit would (and does on the one I heard on Teh InterWev) do wonders but muh quad tips

The best argument as to why BMW screwed up is, honestly, the C63 and GLC63 can fit a 4.0l hot-vee tt engine, so why cant' the F80/X3M/whatever? Would have saved a lot of development money and you get a yeti/chewbacca sound in ur tiny M car. Oh well.

I'll repost my first S55 MPE encounter years ago:

Re S55...way back when the F80 was just out in 2014, I was at a BMWCCA autox event at the Perf Center. I was in the pits attending to my E90 M3, checking pressures, rechecking lug bolt torque, etc, and I heard this wicked sound, braaaatttt, braaaaaaatttt, going on in the background. I didn't actively pay attention to it at first, but my mind was thinking back to my motocross days in the 1970s as I continued to focus on getting the car ready. I was thinking big bore 2-strokes: Maico 501? Yamaha SC500? Penton 400? Suzuki TM400? Good thoughts continued while that wicked sounding engine revving out hard through the gears multiple times continued, memories of racing guys on these back then, getting pelted with dirt and rocks from a friend's Penton 400, etc...about that time the F80 M3 comes into view with Mike Renner just getting on it good, pre-running the course for the day. That brought me back to the present. F80 M3, M-performance exhaust...sounded great to me. It is what it is. Not an S85 or S65 wail but a whole different chorus of crazy tones.

At that same event there was an M6 with a full Meisterschaft exhaust, and the S85 screaming through that system is about the best sounding car I've heard (WOT, high revs, not idling).

Weighs almost the same as the E92. At least with an M3/4 you get lower weight in exchange for a turbo engine and crappy steering

The M2 comp weights more than an M4? I highly doubt that.

EDIT: Ahh I see it's 10kg less only

Funny, mine liked the fact that DCT is faster. Nothing wrong with 2nd place though.

Ah shit, lmao. You know, faster depends on a lot of factors.

We'll see how you feel about second place when your DCT is beat by my 6MT 😂

All jokes aside... you know I have been thinking about going to the darkside if I get a track only E9x. Sigh... I suppose it is the only logical thing to do...

And I have been thinking of going to the dark side also as we miss the heck out of shifting ourselves. Worse problems to have.

I like using DIN weights. As we've seen many times, US weights are marketing bullcrap

M4 6MT: 1590 kg
https://www.km77.com/coches/bmw/seri...m4-coupe/datos

M3 6MT: 1610 kg
https://www.km77.com/coches/bmw/seri...-berlina/datos

M2 C: 1625 kg
https://www.km77.com/coches/bmw/seri...petition/datos

I would never buy a car that is heavier but smaller and with a shorter wheelbase than another one that's readily available.

I'm glad they finally gave it a real M engine but still think the M3/4 are better buys.

As someone who owned an M4 for years and recently has driven an M2 a lot. The M2 is worlds better feeling and steering even in base form.

I agree. We have no desire for the monster sized M4, and ~2% weight difference is meaningless for a street use car. On the M2 forum, you see some posters whining about weight and then they tack on a sunroof, 30-40lbs more located at the worst possible distance from the CG, along with a 55lb extra DCT.

US weights must include all options expected to be on 33% or more of cars sold. Hence the M2C weight quoted definitely includes the DCT and likely includes a sunroof too.

We're getting a 6MT slicktop, and I'm going to weigh it just out of curiosity to see what the deal is with it.
