Guidance needed regarding upkeep of 2008
I have a 2008 I acquired with 60500. Sparks were done at 40000, had the differential changed when I bought it. Outside mechanic remarking there was a lot of material in old diff oil, everything is fine.
I am going to attempt to keep this car as long as possible. Given the age of the car, outside TA and RB, what are some things that will begin to fail given the life of the car. For example, the boots on connections are starting to dry rot. Whether a figment of my imagination or not, gumme phledge has worked life into a lot of the rubber. Whats the lifespan of the hoses/. Should I wait for a failure or do an overhaul? My question for you guys is what types of steps would you take with a 10 year old car which appears to have been well maintained? Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions. |

Coolant thermostat & sensor fails commonly around 65,000 miles or later. It mostly fails in open position, so cars takes longer to warm up. Change when it fails.
May consider changing throttle actuators (both at same time) even if one fails. Recommend Mpowermotorsports rebuild actuators since they have lifetime warranty and BMW never updates these. Check coolant hoses regularly, change if needed. Coolant flush & power steering fluid flush if never done before. Serpentine belt & idler pulleys along with water pump & thermostat and sensor at 100,000 miles or later, unless they fail sooner. Engine mounts around 75,000 miles. These fail commonly. Do this when getting rod bearings changed. Change/upgrade suspension components when needed. Change spark plugs every 30,000 miles religiously since our cars do not have knock sensors & ECU relies on spark plug parameters to adjust timing. Some say this has a role in premature rod bearing wear too 🤔 Enjoy ur ride! |

When discussing preventative items there is no end to the components you can replace and the money you can spend. It sounds like you've made good progress; any preventative regimen starts will consistent fluid changes; everything -tranny, diff, coolant, brake, power steering (if equipped), oil. Then ensure filters are clean and new. Replace suspension parts as they show wear, same for belts, tensioner pulleys, hoses. On other BMW models a lot of people replace cooling components preventively, but the E9x hasn't shown notable issues in this department, however there are some that will contend they should be replaced. I'll say the E9x is much better in that department than previous models. Most everything else is replace at failure. Then of course there's the RBs, and you can pretty much read all you need to about that.

A couple other items to consider now that you have a good list going. These commonly fail over time.
1) idle control valve (you get a bouncing idle when this issue occurs) 2) fuel tank breather valve (car stalls after fill up) 3) Coil packs (they tend not to throw codes even when they are not working well. at 10 years, they are overdue) The dif oil having debris has me concerned you might need a new rear dif soon.

Evaporator/Condenser it can go anytime. It's a major job that requires the dash to be out.
Fuel tank breather valve- if you have a bouncy idle this is most likely the culprit Valve cover gasket- if you notice oil seeping, replacement is needed |
