295 ECS vs 285 PS4S

About to get my new set of summer wheels (Apex EC7s 18x10 and 10.5), and am planning what I want to mount up to them. Originally chose the rear wheel and offset with the though of mounting up a 295 in the back. Now I'm trying to determine if it's worth giving up 10mm in the back from the ECS for the slightly better overall tire that is the PS4S (they max out at 285 on the 18s). Currently just planning to handle bolt on mods, and mostly street driving (not planning heavy track work for these). Difference in costs is $1026 vs $1074 after rebate, so not a huge difference.

Anyone opinions if the extra performance from the PS4S would be worth it over getting a slightly wider rear tire? I had the PS4S in a square setup and really enjoyed them, even if they were a bit overkill on the street.

What do you mean by "ECS"

4S is hard to beat as a street tire.

I would go to 265/35/18, 295/30/18 Michelin Cup2 or Yokohama A052 if you want more grip AND you have coilovers to dial in the ride height. 295/30/18 is 1" smaller diameter than stock so it will look funky if you don't adjust accordingly

Sorry, meant the Continental Extreme Contact Sports. Not feeling the need to go stickier. Not the greatest weather for that kind of tire, either.

Leaning toward the PS4S right now. Planning on a 275/35/18 up front, and a slight stagger on the rear with the 285/35/18. Hoping that gives a little more rear grip and makes it a little less twitchy than my old 275 square setup felt. Currently stock suspension, and may do Bilstein B6s with Swift springs if the Bilsteins ever come in stock. Definitely need to pull the camber pins for the 275s.

I would go with 265/285 or 275/285 4S. It's a great street tire that lasts long.

I have a set of 275/35-18 Contis ExtremeContact sporst on my 18x10 Bimmerworld wheels, and a set of 275/30-19 PS4S on my square set of 9.5 OEM 220M's. I'm driving on the Michelins right now and they're great tires, but the ultimate grip is not a big enuogh difference to justify the price difference - the PS4S do wear significantly better, but if you're staggered your'e going to be replacing tires relatively often due to camber/toe wear, particularly up front. The contis are quieter on my car - this is my second set of them in a couple different sizes.

I'd use the Conti, especially if you plan to track the car. The conti is an amazingly capable and consistent track tire for a "true street" summer tire, slower than the PS4S over 1-2 laps, but doesn't fall off a cliff and is friendly and predictable and good in the rain down to the wear bars.

I did the 275/295 split with the old Conti DW and absolutely hated it. The ECS is a totally different tire, it's a blast. We also put them on our E63 when the oem garbage fire tires wore out, and the grip is almost too good to be fun.

Another difference - the PS4S is an edgier tire at the limit. If you are looking for friendlier limit behavior than you had on your square Michelin setup, the Conti is your droid. The 285 Michelin on a 10.5 is not going to behave significantly different from a 275 on a 10, you might have a little less oversteer but the limit behavior will be the same - a little edgy/snappy.

Ended up getting the PS4S mounted up. Will put them on when it gets slightly warmer out. The 285s still barely fit on my tire rack for winter storage.

Nice you'll be happy (except for not being able to rotate, but hey, new tires faster is actually a good thing for some people)

I have three of those damn tire racks and once I mounted them to studs, only one of them has room for 4 tires and those are the 4 255/8.5" winters our benz takes. I need like 4 more tire racks. I can't imagine how people with vettes and camaros and such that actually take big tires deal with it - a 13" wheel with a 335 on it would knock it down to two tires per tire rack

I figured that since I'm probably only putting about 3k miles a year on the summers (and maybe 1k on the winters), I'll age out the tires before they really wear out even with staggered. My beater E61 covers the rest of the miles these days.

May add more tire racks if I pick up a 958 Cayenne Turbo, as I may run a dual tire setup on that. Though I'd probably wait until a new house with more garage space.
