Everyone should make educated decisions on if they want to change them or not. I am going to change mine at 60k just because if I change them I know I will never have to mess with it. It is a easy job and can be done in my shop in a afternoon.
That being said there are many just as vcmpower has pointed out that have no issues.
You should write up a DIY

What other tools are required beyond basics, measuring equipment, and something to support the motor?

Interesting thread, I have 66K miles on my car and my first oil analysis (posted somewhere in here) shows 11 ppm on lead. Not really something to be concerned about, but seeing how you guys are planing to do this, I am curious as to what the bearings look like when you eventually pull them out.

Mike,

Having built 100's of engines, including many race M engines (new and old) the job is pretty routine. As for pricing on this job, shop rates vary from state to state, however one can expect to pay 9.6-10 hours of labor. So the labor can vary between $850-$1200 depending on each shop. This does not include the price of the bearings, new oil pan gasket and engine oil.

Steven, I really don't feel this is a necessary upgrade or repair required. Continue to change your oil every 5000 miles if you want to be on the safe side. Continue using 10W-60, our vehicles are wet sump. There have been plenty of threads started lately instilling a ton of unnecessary fear into a lot of S65 M3 owners as of late. VCM said it best comparing it to human heart failure. Sure it can happen, but its not as common. As a matter of fact, this rod bearing failure is not nearly as common as heart failure.

The sub-frame/differential bushings however, definitely a good idea.

A voice of reason in this hysteria... and with a fair repair price to boot as well.

Are there any precautions to take? Like change your oil on time and don't over rev when she's cold?
