Good Opportunity or No
I found an opportunity to buy a blown up 2008 e92 m3 with roughly 65k miles on it. Likely rod bearing but I don't have all of the details yet. The sale price on the car is $13,000.
I'd like to purchase the car and a similar mileage motor and enjoy the car for a while before either following in love with it or flipping it. Does this seem like a decent opportunity or should I walk away. Keep in mind I'd plan to swap rod bearing at the time and probably put a fresh clutch in the car before putting the good motor in. All the work would be done by me. Thanks for the help in advance. |

Buy a good car for $23k rather than buying a bad car for $13k and putting $10k into it. Unless you know the bad motor needs only rod bearings.

It would have to be in the 4 figure range to make any sense. There are many higher mileage E9X M3s around the high teens-$20K. It's always easier to get out of a car with no stories after you're done with it.

It’s $10k to swap the engine and do rod bearings if you do it yourself. You *might* get your money back, but probably not, especially on an ‘08.

I would never spend that kind of money on an E9x that wasn't running. You just don't know what else is wrong. By the time you fix her up you'll be past the point of buying a better car to start.
Shameless plug: I'm selling a perfectly running E90 for $18k with maintenance records since the first owner did European Delivery... |
