Just saw that one. Pretty nuts. He has a good maintenance vid on the m4 after that f1 driver pounded it.

I guess its kinda expected for wheels to be "consumables" as well. Those cars take a beating.

I agree but usually, they're consumable, literally. Like the tire fails and the wheel is gone, or some sort of incident..not just some crack from pretty normal use.

I guess this is why I don't see many teams running E88's

I've never liked that design. The BMWCCA Raffle M5 has those wheels and if I won I'd swap them immediately.

More generally, the video is a good reminder that track wheels are consumables. I don't see the point of running expensive wheels at the track for serious track use. In this case the expensive BBS wheels are less durable than cheaper ones, ridiculous.

I loved the comment on the length of the crack and how teams measure etc. Just like planes, there are cracks on the wings but they go measuring and controlling their size before replacing.

My brain automatically associates fancy wheels with hard parkers. Mind you I have BBS FI on my street car, now that's a design I love.

This.

Usually, the guys chasing E88's will never hit a track, at least here in the states.

I was just having this conversation about how most E88s in the US probably won't see extended track use. I like dogbone approach with 3 sets of wheels with some sort of damaged wheel program .

Yup. I have 7 sets of track wheels between the two track cars. All either the BW TA5R or the TEAL16

Some people actually use them on track but I'm not gonna lie, I may have to get some dedicated track wheels because it's not worth replacing barrels at that price point.

Looks aside (I'm not a fan), are the E88s that much lighter than a good forged 1 piece wheel?

I always figured people who spent big $ on e88's just liked the classic look and enjoyed spending hours cleaning wheels.. tbf the ring isn't exactly thunder hill it'll wreck some shit.. three piece wheels are a pain in the ass and wheel technology has come a long way since their conception so it really doesn't make sense to run them on a track especially state side unless you got $ to burn.

RIAs are calling your name! Hard to beat the looks of E88s though.

It's hard finding a wheel spec that fits my application without going the custom route.

In fact, they are heavier than the equivalent sized one piece wheel by 1-2lbs.
