What Fell Out Of Front Of Car?
Was backing the car out of the garage and my wife noticed something hanging down below the bottom of the car in the front (just behind the radiator). I easily pulled it out and Pic 1 is a shot of the overall shape of this rubber piece; Pic 2 is an end shot; Pic 3 is a top view (not real clear, but it looks like this piece slides over something with a compression type of fitting)
Anyone recognize this piece of rubber and it's purpose?

Just curious, how long have you owned your car and how many miles have you put on it? I've only got 12K miles, but had the car since Oct'08 (use a truck for my DD)

Yes - it is part #25. There are actually two of them. If you feel under the front bumper, you will find a tray that has a front and back edge. Both of them should have one of these strips on them. They seem to make a seal behind the bumper.
I found it lying out of place when I removed my front bumper. With the bumper off it was easy to replace. You probably can do it with the bumper on but might have to push on pieces to make it fit. |

As already said, those 2 rubber pieces 'seal' the exiting air from the oil cooler. Doesn't seem critical, but probably aides to keep the engine compartment a hair cooler, by directing that hot air below the car.
It's easy to install, especially if you lift the car a little. After scrutinizing both pieces, the rear piece is the one that can be knocked loose when installing the bottom part. Guess QA guys don't check under the car . I reinstalled mine in about 10 minutes, without lifting the car, but had to work blindly. And those tabs that are supposed to keep the strip in place are pretty darn sharp, so watch your fingers folks. It's better to lift the car a little to finish quicker. Just driving over a pair of 2x6s can do the trick. Hope this helps. |

Here's a couple of shots of what the undertray part looks like with/without the rubber seal. I glued down the edges to hopefully keep it from coming off again. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345558

Here's another photo showing the undertray component where they two rubber seals attach...and what it looks like after being beaten to death (Note this was posted by someone else on another thread related to the FRSS (falling rubber seal syndrome). I saved the photo but not the thread so apologies to original poster for lack of attribution.

I don't think its the hood to headlights liner as I think this one looks different. I'm missing the top of headlights piece and need to order a new one.

OP - jealous of your garage floor...
Well this has been covered thoroughly but I did have a picture of one of these that is a little more difficult to get to without removing some of the under-body shield work right behind the bumper. I had the right side under-body shield off and shot a picture looking up above the center underbody front shield directly behind the bumper underneath the radiator and oil cooler. This gasket is sitting on top of the plastic vent sealing 'more or less' against the bottom of the radiator frame (doesn't look so sealing in my picture). There is another one that was shown in a picture in post above that seals the front of the ducting against what looks like the bumper cover. |
