Disappointed after a driving an M2
Yesterday I was lucky enough to get into a friends M2 6mt. He gave me the full reigns to drive it however I wanted. (Good friend I know)
Before anyone brings it up, yes I know the e92 had a higher original MSRP and some people just want new cars. But anyway.... I did love the size, tossability, shifter feel, and was impressed with the overall handling. But I came back thinking "Who in their right mind spends that kind of money over a used E92". -No significant power difference -Sounded terrible compared to the S65 -Overall interior fit and finish made my e92 feel premium. I was considering a used M2 once prices came down, but decided that ill indeed keep my e92. Has anyone else driven an M2? I'm curious if anyone else had the same experience.

I sat in one at the auto show a few years ago and immediately noticed that the interior quality was just "okay". Obviously, it's their entry-level car in this country and somewhat built to a price so they've got to find savings somewhere. The interior isn't bad, it just isn't very luxurious. I would definitely say it is a functional an simple interior.

You are dead on. Just getting past how it looks was hard enough for me. Literally drove it for two minutes and turned around.

Have not driven the M2, only sat in one and rode in one (on a track at a BMW event).
I agree with you on most points and especially in regards to the value an e9x provides vs. the market. Hard to find a better value than a used/clean e9x m3. I don't switch up cars often, but I am fearful for the amount of money I will have to spend to "move up" from the e9x M3 platform... when the time comes.

Had a quick go at a BMW day last year. Normal street driving so can't say much about when you get on it. Plenty grunt, tossable, better sound than the E8x, overall nice. Looks good but nothing like the E9x imo. Obviously "cheaper" inside as its meant to.
In summary plenty car for the buck but personally would never trade my E90M for one which to me feels and sound much more special. |

Funny, I drove an F80 M3 yesterday and while it fast and a great looking car it just felt numb. I should say I felt numb. It just didn't get me going.

I'm in the minority here...I like the M2, not in replacement of my E90 M3 though...but in addition to. I'm never getting rid of my E90. lol
Strongly considering selling my E46 M3 for a used M2 in the near future. I've driven the M2 on the street and track and I enjoyed it.

I daily an E46 sport wagon and use my M3 as my weekend/track/toy car.
None of the newer BMW M models do it for me. Every time I say that people jump on me saying I'm just jealous that I don't have one, because apparently nobody is allowed to simply "not like" something anymore. I'll be the guy clinging to his older BMWs for a long time to come I think. The M2 is actually a really good "modern" driver's car when compared to other vehicles of its generation. It's just that compared to some vehicles that are older than it (such as the E9x) it just doesn't elicit the same type of emotional response while driving.

I was able to put a friend's M2 w/ DCT through it's paces on a curvy backroad last year. Did 2 runs. By the end of the second run, I was pretty much over it.
I like the M2's looks + steering and found the exhaust to be acceptable. Decent power too. But... ...after driving a tuned M3 for three years, I am spoiled by it's telepathic and perfectly linear throttle response and delicious intake sounds. No turbo-engined car (that I can afford) will ever be able to replicate that. Plus I'm not willing to drop $55K (or more) for Dakota Leather and an interior with Fisher-Price finishes.

Felt the same, nothing special, mundane, soft, uneventful. The DCT felt particularly bad, the DCT felt more direct and kick in your pants on M3/4s and lacking on the M2s after driving them back to back, downshifts in the M2 were the most disappointing aspect of the DCT. I put it thru it’s paces on the track on two separate occasions.
Haven’t driven a 6spd, I’d hope it would be better. Last edited by tdott; 04-24-2018 at 01:34 PM.. |

i drove one on a track at the thermal club when bmw put on a free performance day. i enjoyed the m2 the most out of the m3/4, m5, m6, and x5/6. the m2 felt the most neutral and i liked how it was smaller. this is strictly basing the car on how i want it to feel on track.
for a daily driver, the m3/4 is hard to beat. very usable. x5 would be my no-budget choice.

I like the M2. If I had to stick with BMW, I would have traded my e92 for it; for the sake of having something new
Feels lighter and more nimble and you can do some nice Turbo upgrades for big power; lap times are super impressive out of the box too. Interior is weak however |

Don't get me wrong, I adore my 92M but I wonder how much of these comments are cos we are an E9x M3 forum.
I mean, I wonder of there's anyone in the M2 forum saying "I drove an E9x M3 and regret buying my M2." Lol |

here is another thing i figured out about myself. it is ok to acknowledge a fast car, but not like the way it looks or drives. i had driven the f8x non-m cars when i went to the dealer for loaners. this was before i had driven an f8x M car. something very distinct changed about the cars changed... they simply don't have the bmw feel i fell in love with driving an e46 325ci, and now my e92. the attitude of the brand has changed. the performance is there, no doubt about that, but i'm not "wowed" by it. after driving the new M cars on track at a performance day, i was a little underwhelmed. i liked it ok, but i wasn't in love. now, if i could afford to have a loaded m5 for a daily driver, i'd be in love. my love for a great car, and my love for how a car makes me feel, is very different though.

M2 was a choice I had and test drove before coming back. There are plenty of reasons not to like it over the e92 IMO. I agree with @roastbeef that starting with the F series BMW cars lost thier signature “feel”. They feel like Lexus now. |

If they've had experience with other M cars or other sports cars, then chances are they might not. If they are afraid of buying an older car out of warranty or want the latest tech, then yes of course they will love the new Ms.

I've driven the M2 several times and have been in the 2er chassis on lease for almost 3 years now. As many of you know I had an E90 M3 ZCP for a few years and regret every day letting it go. The M2 has more grunt for anything under 80mph, handles noticeably better, and exterior looks in the LCI with any color but blue has a slight edge to me over E9x. Interior is fine and only a small step down from E9x and the tech is quite a bit ahead but still behind Audi. Seats are equally comfortable and gripping for aggressive driving. I think M2 sounds great for a turbo but of course S65 can't be beat.
If I'm using my brain, the M2 makes way more sense for me except it's $60k. If I'm using my heart, I miss the E9x something fierce. While it's potentially half the price of the M2, used ownership has its financial risks. Tough call for me overall and I'm going to drive an E92 on Monday to remind myself what I might be getting into. |

Drove a 2010 E92 M3 and a 2014 RS5 today on 40F sopping wet slush melted roads. Both cars... amazing. I've been reminded that NA is king. The M2 is more playful and controllable but cannot compete with these engines and overall packages.
