I got a V1 after a bogus ticket I was given on my motorcycle this summer. I was written up for more than I was going, conveniently putting me in the next fee/revenue tier. The officer didn't show up for my court date, so justice was served in the end. Although he probably wrote 5-10 more tickets in the time he could have been spending in court.
The CHP use Ka band out here, and the Valentine always gives me plenty of warning when I get close to radar. The downside is all the false alarms in the other bands. The laser detector is pretty much worthless. It goes off all the time from sun glints and oncoming headlights. I wish I had the option to disable bands that I know aren't used for speed measurement. The Escorts definitely have an advantage there with the GPS filtering. I don't know why Valentine doesn't develop a similar product (other than they've more than recouped their original development costs and are making a tidy profit on the V1). I think you have a pretty good case for court. At the very least you should be able to plea for leniency and get the points and fees reduced. Good luck. |

My husband is an MD and gets pulled over lots of time by young cops. The older guys tend to let him off because if he comes into the local ER he wants to be able to use his name. You can get off if you go to court but I agree you need a good detector. This thread came in handy as I've been pulled over lately quite a bit and was looking into investing into one.

I am an OB in a relatively small town. I have been stopped 5 times going to the hospital over the last 10 years. I received on ticket that the judge dismissed. There are many times in the middle of the night that I get a call from the labor nurses about an acute emergency. Understand that 5 minutes additional minutes of oxygen deprivation can be life damaging (think cerebral palsy) or life ending. I live 15 minutes during usual traffic and 8 minutes at a safe and reasonable high speed that are above the posted limits. In addition, there is talk about redlight cameras. I am sorry, at 3 am....I am going to speed. But please answer me this...if I pass an officer on the highway going 90 mph...he will give chase. How fast does he have to go to catch me? So, I am at an unreasonable speed at 90...but he is reasonable at 130? Or better yet...my M5 is unreasonable at 72 in a 65 and will get ticketed...but a 20 year old minivan, running mismatched tires...overloaded and towing a trailer will get ignored at 68 mph...

If you don't believe that there's only one physician or surgeon who is qualified enough to do certain emergency procedures, I can tell you that you are being EXTREMELY naive. As medicine gets more and more specialized, there are procedures that not everyone feels comfortable doing. I'm just speaking the way I see it here in Seattle. We have attendings, fellows, and residents who cover multiple hospitals at night. It is not uncommon that people will be shuttling back and forth the VA / UWMC / Children's / Harborview. Our interventional radiologists cover both UWMC and HMC at night. If there is a bleed requiring embolization, they'll be the one driving their own car between the hospitals. If you think that hypothetical situation doesn't exist in real life, think again. Even a lowly intern like me had the pleasure of finishing a helping out a surgical case at Harborview and have to rush back to UWMC so that I can be on time for morning rounds. I speak from experience, my own experience. There are jerks that pull the badge or pager out to avoid responsibility, but there are true emergencies that got ruined by obvious power trip. Without further information, it would be tough to determine the situation. As far as escorting goes, I don't know which jurisdiction you work for, but here in Seattle, UWPD, WSP and SPD have been instructed to in case in medical emergencies provide transport for the medical personnel to the hospital, especially if they were stuck in Husky game traffic. You are more than welcomed to sit on your moral high horse. Quote:
Let's use a less extreme sample. Instead of an aneurysm, your loved one developed sub-sternal chest pain. He / she was taken to the nearest ER, and ECG showed an STEMI (heart attack in lay people's terms). He / she needs to be taken to the cath lab to get an angiogram done and possible balloon / stent placement. National standard for door-to-ballon time is less than 90 minutes. This has been shown to improve survival rate. By the time the attending cardiologist is paged, he / she usually only have less than an hour to get into the hospital for the catheterization. How do you feel if you loved one did not get the balloon / stent in the 90 minutes and suffered permanent damage to heart? The officer has the discretion to do what he thinks is the best in that situation, but simply calling every MD claiming that they have an emergency as being irresponsible is stupid

I have to answer your ignorant comment ...YES I'M AN ER DOCTOR AND YES CALLED BY WORK TO COVER A SHORT STAFF SINCE WE ADOPTED LATELY A NEW POLICY REGARDING H1N1 VIRUS(do you know what it is): YOU don't know how people feel in the ER and how vulnerable they can get.The next time you or some one you know go to an ER and Stay 4 hours before someone sees you, you will apperciate a doctor trying to go fast to help...(your comments are low class)

What can you do... There is a lot of people has a poor mentality...My work is writting a letter to give it to the judge....The next time these people go to the ER and stay for hours before someone sees them they will know what we are talking about. The ER problem that we face lately that people panic when they have a flu like symptoms thinking they have H1N1 and they flood the ER

Some doctors do take advantage, but due to the nature of their work they should given breaks. This officer either can't think outside of the box or is resentful of doctors. Yes, some doctors are pompous asses, but it does not diminish the importance of their work. I come from a NYPD family and harbor no dislike for PO's. This cop was just a tool or an idiot.

I'm not saying that there aren't bad cops out there, or ones who are trying to compensate for small penises or growing up the kid everyone hated. I just take exception to all the posts here where the OP admits to breaking the law and then is upset that they get caught. Don't like the law? Do something about it. There is a poster here that actively worked to get the Illinois tint law changed, and it worked. He took the proper steps and made a difference. Until then, I will continue to enforce the laws that are out there until some enterprising soul changes them. Do you deliberately disobey your boss or the rules of your profession? I doubt it. Just like you and the OP, I go to work to get paid. That's how I afford my new M3 Everyone has the misconception that: a) Police departments make a lot of revenue from traffic tickets. It's not true. The average revenue from each ticket after the state takes the money to provide free public school for your kids is about four bucks. Hardly a huge incentive, but I admit I don't know about other states. Our fines are only $75 b) Cops have some sort of incentive for writing more tickets. If that were the case, I'd have the toaster. When the comment "Go catch real criminals" gets played, I have to laugh. You have no idea what I have done in my career. As for the God complex comment, I apologize for that. It was my ire showing through, and I mean no personal disrespect for the OP or those in his field. I am just sick of it. Flame if you have to, I can take it |

I just ordered a BEL STi-R based on some research into test results and less falses and tunability. Check out some of the Radar Detector forums and the Guys of Lidar (GOL) tests.

My wife is a neuro ICU nurse and pages neurologists very frequently for late-night emergency procedures, so I fully understand the urgency that is so vital to saving the lives her patients. I have to say that I disagree a little bit with the posters who are saying that MDs should be allowed to speed excessively and quite possibly risk others' lives responding to an emergency call. Is there some kind of emergency, high speed driving school that on-call physicians attend as part of medical school? Not that I know of.. Of course, as in this case and others, common sense says that an on-call physician should be immediately allowed to safely proceed and attend to the patient requiring his skills. And, yes, neurosurgery is a very specialized field and not just any GP can perform these very unique procedures. I'm all for saving lives, but I am against risking the lives of others in the process.
