08s were quite plentiful. Comparing the E9X to the E46, the E46 had a waiting list. E9Xs were sitting on the lot.

Also, I'm sure the addition of a sedan to the lineup means more M3s on the road.

Oh yeah...the economy sucks.

If I had those kind of powers I wouldn't be driving an M3 but something more exotic with all the money I'd have accrued! Such powers of clairvoyance could be put to better use predicting the state of the economy, price of futures, or the outcome in the Middle East or with North Korea!

Sorry, couldn't avoid a semi-humorous response. Seriously, there no way to really know this since we don't know what the economy will look like at that point. If you have a good financial reserve and can really afford the car then make your best deal and enjoy it. Forget about thinking about a car as an investment--an enjoyment yes--investment no.

Yes, S5's are really that popular. The M3 was over produced for 2008, but they have redirected a lot of that production to other parts of the world now so there are not nearly as many 09's sitting around. You are going to lose money selling a car in 6 months or 6 years, there is no way around it.

Everyone should remember 08' when they are complaining about paying over retail for the next generation of M3's. I doubt BMW will make the same mistake twice when launching a hot car.

"The M3 was over produced for 2008"

Interesting comment - didn't know that. Makes me wonder if that's part of the reason they were so quick to make superficial changes to the rear taillights for '09 - to distinguish it from the '08s, perhaps?

M3 have a very low resale value b/c the dealers where giving them away for 10k less than msrp (08 model)..I friend of mine was looking for a S5 and the best he could get was 1k of msrp..

Lets say it was february 09 and the dealers where selling a brand new 08 M3 for 56k then a used m3 should logically be less than that....you get the point...

If the deal is absolutely dependent on you losing no more than 3 grand, pass, because you can't control that factor, nor predict it.

That coupe you are looking at will probably be worth ~$40k in 1 year. The sunroof is going to make it hard to sell as well.

+1000
S5's are really that hot and their resale value is much much better than M3's in any shape or form.....

You can get a m3 w/ less than 5K miles for $50K....... No way you are getting a S5 with 5K miles for less than $55K..... Not bad for a car that is $10K cheaper than M3.

FOR EXAMPLE:

There are bunch of people that will not buy a M3 without a sunroof..... It all depends on the buyer's preference..... But no one will give you a "discount" bec the car has a sunroof..... I would expect a discount if the car does NOT have a sunroof.... It all depends on the buyer....

Absolutely, there are some who won't buy one without a sunroof. However, I would venture to bet that more people (and thus more potential buyers) would want their coupe with the trademark CF roof than a sunroof, at least on the E92 model...

I still stand by that car being worth ~$40k in a year...

Using that term, practically ALL cars were 'overproduced' in 2008. The more accurate depiction is nobody predicted demand would decline so much because nobody predicted the meltdown either. And even if somebody had predicted it, car manufacturers can't react that quickly anyway.

Exactly. This car is an investment in my SOUL. Not easy to attach a dollar-figure to that ROI. Paid cash for mine and am driving it like I stole it! Have over 21K miles on her and am looking forward to at LEAST another 180K before buying something else.

Go check with your local dealer how many sunroofs they sell on the E92. You'll see how big the used market will be then.
I asked my dealer and he looked at me like I had two heads. He's never sold one or been asked for one with a sunroof.
It's a feature of the original design that makes up part of the cars character. I guarantee you that you'll pick up the sunroof cars waaaaaaaay cheaper used than CF version.

This may be a little of topic but am I the only idiot that payed MSRP for the car when it first came out. I had it on order because I wanted what I wanted. I know it's late in the game to be asking, I have to think its because I wanted one of the first ones out and it looks like I paid for it. Please tell me someone else did this or I will feel like a fool. If you can get 50 go for it. Next time around I'll be wiser but I just had to have it.

I bought my 08 M3 for $52k with 5000 miles 1 month ago, did check carfax which shows its a leased car since Feb 2009 and the car was only 5 months old.
Actually I was looking at another leased car which had only 200 miles and was sold.
Mine was a Jerez black, with Nav, 19", EDC, and the MSRP sheet is still the car, its listed as $68k.
Year 2008 isnt good for all car companies not just M3, a dream car that i can afford may happen only these few years.
