Why didn't BMW make a 4-door M3 every generation?

I was reading about the M3 in Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, BMW did not make an M3 sedan on the E30 and E46 generation. How come they only made a 4-door M3 on the E36 and E90 generation? I know not everything on Wikipedia can be trusted but I am buying this.

Who knows.

They just didn't, calculated some stuff, crunched some numbers and realized no one would pay for it, therefore didn't do it.

It's pretty successful tho so I think they'll keep it for next gen M3.

Don't you watch Top Gear UK??!!

Quote Jeremy Clarkson (on the M3 saloon) "Now your children can have their spleens crushed, too!!"

Quite simply, BMW realised there is a market out there for this type of car - fathers such as myself that want the performance of an M3 but don't enjoy shoehorning kids into the back of a coupe. Smart move.

The X6, however, is a monumental stuff up!

The first gen M3 was just a racing homologation special, no need for another body style.

As for the E46 I wish they had made a sedan version because in the regular 3 Series of that generation, the Sedan was lighter than the coupe by 10 or 20 lbs and sedans are a couple of grand cheaper. That would have been a great car for those of us who prefer sedans to coupes.

I thought I remembered reading once upon a time that there was a structural problem that prevented the E46 from becoming an M.

i think so.. the infamous subframe issue on the e46 m3s..
that's the reason that kept me from getting an M3 and i'm glad it did!

Hmm.

Didn't know that, that's as good a reason as any.

I read some time ago that the reason why they never made a sedan in the e46 generation was due to the fact that the proximity of the rear door and rear extended fender flares caused engineering/design issues... who know's.. I agree, most likely cause was the bean counters added up the cost of the different components and figured there wasn't a market to justify the sedan...
