Fuel Pump Malfunction Troubleshooting Help
Hey Everyone,
Couple of nights ago I noticed that when the car started up it was idling pretty rough. Idle was bouncing maybe +/- 100 RPM's. Once it warmed up, everything seemed OK. About 1 mile down the road, getting onto the freeway I give it a little gas in 4th gear (revs were not very high) and I feel a studder. Chime sounds and the iDrive screen is flashing "Fuel Pump Malfunction" The car automatically goes into limp mode with the redline reduced. I continue to my destination, and shut the car off. I turn it back on, and it appears that the car is OK. No CEL, or SES is on at restart. I go to dinner, come back to the car and restart a couple hours later. Immediately I get a CEL and it says "INCREASED EMISSIONS". Going home, and getting on the freeway at about 30% throttle I get the same "Fuel Pump Malfunction" screen on iDrive. I got an OBD2 scanner. Nothing fancy, just a cheapo from Walmart. Codes were as follows. P0092 - Fuel Pressure Reg 1 Control Circuit High P0191 - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance P0193 - Fuel Rail Pressure Circuit High Input P2288 - Injector Pressure Control too High P3006 - Fuel Pressure Pressure Rate Controlled, Pressure Too High As a good forum member, I have been searching for two days now. It appears that this is one of three things... A - Low Pressure Sensor B - EKP Module C - Fuel Pump (maybe?) Car is a March 08 Build, so it falls within the range of the vehicles that are known to have the EKP modules go bad commonly. However, I found that people with P0191 claim that just replacing the Fuel Pressure Sensor fixes their issues. My plan is to replace the Fuel Pressure Sensor tonight, clear the codes, and restart and see what happens. Im really hoping this fixes it because this is the cheapest option. Does anyone have any insight into my issues? I would rather not waste the $$$ Replacing the sensor if someone can tell me that it is definitely the EKP module or something else... I appreciate the help!

Well that's a howdy doody! Don't even give us a chance to post wild ideas for you to throw money at lol.
I was going to say that your logic made total sense. With the absence of a good technician and more expensive diagnostic equipment, I too would have started with the lowest cost option to fix. Great job! |

Thanks! I was pretty worried it was going to be something major. I feel I got lucky with the easy fix.
It was kind of frustrating, just getting the car of my dreams. Week 1 need a battery replacement $300, week 2 CEL goes off. I was sooooooo relieved that it was only the sensor, simple fix, no coding required.

Replace the fuel pressure sensor first. Clear faults and then troubleshoot from there if issues persist. 80% chance it will rectify these issues.

Having replaced all three, the EKP solved the issue for me.

I have an EKP module here if the sensor doesn't do the trick. Fortunately the module is extremely easy to swap out.

Just to bump this thread up I'm having the same issue, replaced the sensor and did the EKP module last night. Same issues this morning driving to work. Should I test the fuel pump wiring/relay before purchasing the fuel pump?
