Need Help: BC Button Malfunction
Tried searching with no luck...
Have a 2008 M3, BC button on left side stalk/turn single Two major issues: 1. The BC button does not always work when pressed but more importantly will cycle itself when NOT pressed, as if possessed (multiple changes for several minutes at a time). Which leads to the next issue... 2. The up/down button just to the right of it has the same issue. So combined with #1, it will constantly change the date/time, turn on/off shift lights, etc. Thank God it cannot change any other M settings from that menu. Some other info: It is not a lag in the system, I've completely turned the car off and the next day it will cycle through without being pressed. This even happened after a new battery was put in. I have coding done, however issue was slightly evident prior and has just got worse. I had the car's OEM software updated at the dealer and had the coding re-applied and issue was still evident so I'm assuming it's not software related. I'm guessing it is hardware related based on the symptoms, has anyone successfully replaced just the BC button and up/down next to it? Or does the entire stalk need to be replaced? I have the non-electronic MP steering wheel and I'm wondering if the shop who did that install could have possibly done something which is affecting the operation of these buttons. thanks K

Yikes - looks like you might be in for one of these:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=61_3088 Not sure if that stalk can be taken apart and the switch cleaned or fixed, but does sound like you might have a bum switch or wiring in that stalk. They do not show just that piece as a separate item on realoem. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. |

I would inspect the wiring for obvious damage like cut or stripped insulation, broken connector, etc.
Maybe you can find a wrecked M3 or a part-out on this site and just buy a used assembly. I doubt that thing is meant to be disassembled without breaking things.

Thanks for the helpful info, I might have to go the route of finding a used column...
What's interesting is that I'm driving the car more frequently since it's going into summer, including a few track days, and it actually has started to get a little better. So instead being unresponsive and cycling on it's own, it acts normal about 80% of the time. If it degrades again will post on solutions I eventually take. thanks! Kris

Agree on this, def sounds like a "hw" issue. Possible to find a way to slip some contact spray into the micro switch OP?
