HPDE question

Greetings everyone,

I am attending my first HPDE in Portland, OR in a few weeks. I am supercharging this summer and sounds like I won't have it in time to get on the car before the class. Part of me wants to push my class out to later in the summer so I have the supercharger on, part of me thinks because it's my first class having the NA setup is just fine.

Thoughts on this from those who have done a few of these?

If you've never tracked before, there is absolutely no need to 'have' the supercharger installed before your first event. If anything NA will be better, honestly.

I would really recommend against your first HPDE also being immediately after putting on a supercharger. Driving the car at speed on a track is already a lot to get comfortable with, let alone managing an extra 150hp.

My biggest concern would be that you will very quickly overwhelm the brakes and suspension. In other words...this is a safety thing. The stock brakes are "adequate" for stock power levels, but as soon as you increase power, you'll find them overheated pretty quickly.

I instructed a first timer with a harrop supercharged e92 m3, it honestly made things way more complicated with the extra power. He had a DCT and while our cars are horrible in full auto, his car would go into limp mode with how much load there was in the gear and being in a lower rpm. He had to shift the car and keep it in the higher rpms which added an extra layer of things to pay attention to while on the track

With that being said, get as much seat time without the supercharger unless you absolutely want it on then go for it. Pay attention to temps as things will get toasty faster

The *one* group I don't coach with lol. They run a good day, you'll have fun! I'm there with HOD, the local BMW club, Cascade Sports Car Club, Audi Club, and a few others.

I've never done an HPDE event let alone ever driven on a track, but I REALLY want to.

What steps do I need to take to sign up for an event? Does one just pay online then show up and drive or is there more to it?

Thanks in advance

Depends on the group, but essentially yes.

Usually there will be some sort of system in place for first timers. In class session, in car instruction, or both.

Disclaimer, I coach with most of the below except Pro Drive including working as a paid coach.

ProDrive, Hooked on Driving, and Cascade Sports Car Club all offer excellent Novice programs. All three include some level of out of car instruction + in car instruction throughout the day. HOD and CSCC have Zoom meetings the week leading up to the event for first timers.

ProDrive: www.prodrive.net
Hooked On Driving: www.hookedondriving.com (go to Pacific Northwest Region)
Cascade Sports Car Club: https://cascade.motorsportreg.com

Portland BMW Club also offers novice groups with a paired instructor, it's a bit more laid back but still a great offering. The other 3 listed above are a bit more structured for novices. Their sign ups are also on MSR: https://www.motorsportreg.com/orgs/p...-bmw-club/hpde

I would steer clear of Track Night in America. They do not offer instruction, no vetting of driver skills for run group assignments, etc. I've been there a few times, and #noped right the fuck out of that.

Sure thing! I'm not sure about ProDrive, but the other clubs I mentioned all allow guests/spectators. So you can come out and see what it's like before signing up for one. I'll be there this Friday with CSCC and next Thursday with HOD.

CSCC always runs their Friday HPDE days to coincide with race weekends, so there'll be races happening Saturday and Sunday all day! I'll be doing time trials on Sunday.

Your first HPDE should be in a fairly stock car with only maintenance type mods for reliability, like brake flush, etc. You will be overwhelmed and more power doesn't help things. Your first couple of days are about learning awareness, looking ahead, and hitting your markers consistently.

Autocross is a great prep for HPDE.

HPDE is great. Hope you had fun.
