i guess there is some kind of a confusion.
the only time you need to remove the bolt is when you replace the vanos unit as a whole or installing Carbahn washer.
this specific solution is clipped on and does not require removing the vanos bolts.
I guess my question is how is the OEM cover attached. It looks like the bolt and washer secure it. If not, how is it secured, and how is a replacement and deansbimmer and dinan version secured?

Stock = plastic cap which is clipped on

Carbahn = flat washer which is bolted on using the vanos gear bolt. Requires grinding the front case due to the washer pushing out the bolt by 3-4mm

Deansbimmer = machined steel cap which is bolted on using the vanos gear bolt. No grinding needed.

Slon Workshop = machined aluminum cap which is clipped on. No grinding needed.

Just came across this issue, so how many of these covers do we need? 2 or 4 for both banks?

Friendly FYI for those contacting Slonik Shop about the gear covers. He's name is Mikhail.

Now y'all don't have to look like the fool I was. 🥴

Sort of - it's more like how we would say "kitty" versus "cat." Small elephant would be directly translated as "malinkiy slonik." And that concludes this Russian lesson .

And safe to assume any bolt on solution will require re-timing?

Bolt on solution will definitely require the timing tool installation due to crazy vanos bolts torque spec.
Removing/installing bolts without it may damage the head.

I'm not 100% positive if the engine need to be retimed.

The carbahn solution does not use the washer, just bolt and steel cap, so no grinding needed. Clarified this on a call with them today.

I'm not so sure about that. Based on pics of seen of the area in front of the VANOS gear bolt, there seems to be only 1mm or so of clearance. The Carbahn cap is 3mm thick. Deansbimmer uses a 2mm cap but the bolt area is recessed to provide clearance.

Again this is just eyeballing from pics available. I've decided to go with the Slonik one just to be certain it doesn't require grinding.

He was gracious and I was respectful and a drama free buyer.

He didn't say anything about it until I figured out his name on WhatsApp and then apologized for calling him both Slonik and Slon.

Then he told me about the translation.
