BMW E92 M3 Engine Blown
Hi Folks,
I bought my 2008 BMW M3 E92 a few weeks back with 92,000 miles on it. The car is immaculate inside and out. Yesterday it developed a knocking in the engine. I dropped it back to the main dealer where I bought it and they said the engine is blown. They found metal filings in the oil. Luckily I bought the car with 2 years all inclusive warranty and they are offering to put a brand new engine into it free of cost. My questions are What will this do to the value of my car? and Am I better off handing it back to them and looking to buy another used E92 M3. (This may not be an option) Thanks |

congrats you get a brand new engine
i would 100% keep the car with a new engine vs another used m3 especially given that this one is "immaculate inside and out" most likely the rod bearings needed to be replaced, which is a common problem for these engines... are you using a new engine from BMW or is it a replacement used engine? if the latter, have the rod bearings replaced if the former, then you should budget for replacement rod bearings after a couple of years since the OEM bearings wear down |

A 2008 with 92k miles didn't have a lot of value to begin with to lose with a new engine swap.
Keep and enjoy the trouble free motoring.

I could look at the bearings closer to the warranty end date. Last edited by Carlow; 06-23-2020 at 11:58 AM.. |

Take the new engine, enjoy it until out of warranty then do the bearings if you plan to keep the car.

You've got the best thing that happened to your car. A remanufactured motor direct from BMW is worth more than the car alone considering you have a 2008. Take the motor, and move on. You don't know how many people wished they had warranty or a brand new motor.

Yeah, for an '08 with 90k+ miles, take the new engine and don't look back. I would demand that the two-year engine warranty start once you receive the fixed car - not original purchase date. Who knows how long they will take to get the car back to you.
If you plan to keep the car for the long haul, plan to replace the RBs again with aftermarket ones (not OEM) the day your engine warranty expires. Enjoy! |

Fortunately for you that warranty will take care of your problem.
The car doesn't know how many miles are on the engine, so it isn't that easy to figure out if you don't disclose it. Even if you do, it would seem like only a positive. As you also said, keep it stock and close to the 2 year mark go ahead and do the rod bearings if you want to keep it. |

Mine just got a brand new engine too and I couldn't be happier. I am definitely keeping the car and so should you. What you should try and do is see if the mechanic will install the upgraded bearings and bolts for you... that way you don't have to worry about bearings for another 70k miles.

They don't . It's a remanufactured S65 by BMW in Germany.

They don't. It's a remanufactured motor of what is left in Germany. Parts/supply is going to run thin as this car reaches its age and end-of-life support.
Eventually, people will dump the S65 platform and look for other engine alternatives, like an LS.

I bought my car with 92k miles, engine replaced by BMW with a reman engine at 65k. This was a huge positive for me. I have all the service records, the receipt for the engine work was 23k. You have a very good deal here.
As SYT states, no way to know (though, on my PPI, the inspectors noted that the engine was very clean and suspected that it might be newer than the car) I replaced the rod bearings within 3 months of purchase, I have no doubts that the engine will far outlast the rest of the car. |

Spun bearing at 36k miles on a 2013. Absolutely ridiculous. As I said in another thread, no abuse just spirited driving... proper warm up, no donuts or drag racing, stock redline, oil changed every 6-7k miles, etc. Got the car with 12k miles and the everything was pristine inside and out. It's a complete crapshoot, get your bearings done everyone. |

Is the rod bearing issue definitely in the new engine. Have they not fixed this issue?
Does anyone know of a new engine giving rod bearing issues or are we presuming the issue is still there. |
