DCT Failure
I need your help! My vehicle is an 08 with 50k miles 100% stock and rarely driven hard. Recently, reverse and 1st-2nd shifts have been very jerky. I have also noticed a whine coming from the transmission tunnel at low speeds. After driving from a 75 mile trip I was pulling into my driveway and the I-drive noted a failure. The warning went away after a restart but the jerkiness is still there. Like the gear doesn't fully engage. Has anyone experienced this? I am out of warranty!

Check the tranny oil and see if an update to the most recent DCT software will help.

Having had my DCT tran completely fail/die once after several symptoms came and went.(hesitation, loss of power). Cost a arm/leg to replace. However I had no fault to check prior to failure. Have the BMW dealer check your fault before anything elce may happen.
They can then upgrade the software if it would help. Checking the oil for metal particles could also be helpful should the fault not turn up anything but you'd have to wait for the analysis. |

USAA, Costco, Assurant solutions, Geico and even Wells Fargo offer a product. Check the list of parts covered. Research and read reviews. Good luck OP! Report back with the findings.

Okay guys, so it turns out that there was a severe loss in transmission fluid as result of a "worn" connection in the reservoir. That was what was explained to me. The malfunction error as noted in the computer reading stated a high temperature in the transmission an thus limited gear selections.
I have no idea how the line could have been worn or even severed. I am very skeptical as I rarely drive my M hard. It stays in non M mode and level 1 shift speeds 98% of the time. Anyway, the repair takes 12 hours and is going to cost me 2000$ They SA and mechanic mentioned that this would fix the problem. I am worried that the high heat could have damaged one or both of the clutches. Would a transmission with low fluid behave as badly as it had been when I noticed the problem? |

When you get the service write-up, take a photo and post it here. I'd be curious what the specific issue was.
Remember that things still just wear out due to old age, manufacturing defects, etc. Nothing is invincible. I wouldn't worry about the high heat, as the trans is built pretty tough and does indeed go into a limp-home mode to protect things if it overheats. The drive mode makes very little difference to longevity. Tons of guys here drive it in S5 every day and rack up tons of miles. As far as clutch life goes, a faster shift mode will actually produce LESS wear since it doesn't have to ride the clutches as heavily.
