OEM Oil$$ - OMG!!
So my wife tells me yesterday that she got a low oil indicator on her '11 E93 M3. I figure I'd throw in some regular oil...counter guy at Advance Auto says it calls for Castrol Edge 10W60 at ~$13/qt. Did some research here and it seems as the bearing tolerances are good with that weight oil. My question is, can I use a conventional oil without worrying about damaging the engine? It is my wife's car and she does not drive it hard at all. Also, it only has about 28k miles. Oh, one more thing, how low is the level when the low indicator light comes on?
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Pretty interesting that the counter guy at Advanced Auto knows more about your car then you do! 10-60 oil is correct for your car and is not cheap.....nothing about an M3 is cheap!

What's the point in having a M car if it is going to get driven like a regular car, neglected, then whined about for being expensive?

The sensor is a bit fickle. Add 1/2 quart, drive it around for a bit, then check again. There is no conventional 10w60 that I know of. BMW specifies only synthetic oil, which is what Castrol Edge is. Alternatively, you can walk up to the parts counter at your dealership and get a bottle of the BMW-branded (made by Shell) 10w60.

I'd actually stick to 1/4 qt fill-ups each time.
I've had crappy experiences with our e-dipstick. And yeah, this car has been out 10 yrs, it uses 10-60W.

Is this for real? If cost of ownership is a concern, you're in for a surprise down the road.
Fyi Spark plugs need to be changed every 37k and diff fluid is 50 per quart. Just a heads up. |

10w-60 is correct. Oem oil is about 13$ per liter. This is the oem oil.

Guys, chill with the "OMG it's an M3 of course it's expensive." OP is just trying to understand how to maintain the car and ensure he doesn't get ripped off or whatever. There's no reason to fall for the German cars are expensive meme.

Thanks for all the replies. I perform all the maintenance on our cars and had an Audi years ago so I'm familiar with parts being expensive, but when possible I try to lessen repair expenses, without sacrificing on quality. My current ride is a '16 V, which I love...had a '10 and '05 V too, which I also loved. I also have a 63 Nova SS convertible with an LS3, and have owned lots of muscle cars in the past. Keep an eye out for more whining in the near future

Buy liqui moly 10w60 5 quart jugs. They are about $45 so you save a lot over buying individual Castrol quarts. You can also buy packs of castrol 10w60 quarts on amazon. They come out to like $10 a quart I believe if you buy 10 quarts. Do some searching around and you'll save money

There's not much selection here, just buy one of the big OEM suppliers like Mahle, Mann, or Hengst. They're all basically the same and there's even some relabeling going on by Baldwin, Wix, etc.
