More details emerge of the perilous rescue...

Quote:
All 12 boys and their soccer coach have been rescued from a Thai cave complex after a two-week ordeal that gripped the world.

Because the team was trapped in an underground tunnel, 2 1/2 miles from the mouth of the cave, getting them out was difficult. The boys had to travel that entire distance tethered to two cave divers with oxygen tanks.

This graphic shows how the team was taken out of the cave:
thai cave diagram how they were rescued Samantha Lee/Business Insider

About 0.6 miles of the journey was completely underwater, where everyone had to wear full face masks.

And because the cave's tunnels are dark, the divers also had to hold onto a 3-mile-long rope and be guided by lights back to the main entrance.

The team members were also given anti-anxiety medication to calm them while the divers got them out.

The last four boys and their 25-year-old soccer coach were extracted from the Tham Luang cave network on Tuesday evening and taken to a nearby hospital, where the eight other boys who were pulled out on Sunday and Monday are recovering. They have been kept in a sterilized isolation unit, are required to eat soft and plain food, and are not allowed to watch TV.
The 2 guides/rescuers deserve all sorts of rewards and accolades after such a heroic and frightening accomplishment!

Unfortunately for me, I am extremely claustrophobic. Add to that being underwater and dark...

^The images I saw this morning, kids were strapped to a litter, wrapped so they couldn't move, and THEN hauled out. They weren't dangling/swimming behind the front diver.

News said there was one pinch point that was only 15 inches wide. I doubt the body board/litter scenario is correct. They would also have to provide buoyancy for the litter so the divers wouldn't have to carry it the two miles (much of it under water)... I think the kids were placed on litters and rushed to helicopters/ambulances to avoid the media frenzy.

Has anyone here done ANY underwater cave diving? If so, explain to us in details how is it...

Did spring diving years ago. Mostly natural springs in Florida but going through small openings etc. down to the source but nothing compared to this. It was under ground but most were relatively shallow (less than 100 feet usually)... Certainly not for those who are claustrophobic though where I dove was wide open compared to spots in this cave!

Yeah, I've done spring diving in Florida as well, as well as penetration wreck diving. There are points where there is rock or metal above your head, which can be a little eerie, but nothing like actual cave diving, which I have no desire to ever attempt. It's one of the most dangerous forms of diving, and regularly claims the lives of even those who are very experienced. No thanks.

Yeah...but nothing in tight, merky water, with extreme high currents like this. Underwater recreation diving in caves are spectactular. I doubt that's how they described their experience...

Yeah, I did, its hard to describe. First its the partly feeling of anxiety when passing very tight tunnels and the bottles on your back are scratching the walls...the sound under water is kinda frightning. Visibility is mostly low caused by swirling particles and sand, the next edge is appearing sometimes very suddenly. When additional limited with movements you have to be very strength in mental things trying not to escape that situation quickly and so on. Focus onto calm breathing, calm moving and strictly following the route.
Here in Germany we have a disused furnace into the Ruhrgebiet and its meanwhile converted to an incredible "indoor" diving area, which is save for experienced divers and you could book kinda guided tours through this big piece of technology. Makes a lot of fun if you like such stuff.

Looks like Unc was correct:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/thai-boys...133024230.html

Again... Whatever it took to get them out safely! If you think about it, these kids were frail, in shock, and the journey was dangerous AF! putting them nearly asleep was a great idea. They would have surely panicked, possibly hyper ventilated and endangered themselves and the rescuers!

I am a solid swimmer and have been since a child. But admittedly, I would be SOL in a similar situation anywhere close to this. But then again, I would NEVER place myself anywhere close to a underwater cave. I have major props to all human beings who have little to no fear of extreme heights or deep underwater divers.

These guys weren't really "swimming" when they did the rescue. This was more underwater hiking/rock climbing.

I would LOVE to go into a cenote that didn't require SCUBA. I tried to learn, but then had surgery on my ear and now I can't go deeper than I could hold my breath anyways, so didn't waste money on certs.
