I wish Garmin would allow interoperability with other devices to capture video. It currently records 1080p at 30fps. I think it would not be unreasonable to be able to record 4k at 60fps these days.
Honestly, it really doesn't need 4k. I run both a smarty cam and garmin and both have sufficient quality for analysis and the YouTube views lol

While not 100% necessary, it is helpful for stopping at specific spots.

I say at least 1440p60fps. That's what I've been running on my GoPro lately to save some space.

I have used the Garmin VIRB XE and Ultra 30 with OBD2 Bluetooth and the VirbEdit solution. It's surely decent, but it's all post rendered gauges and integration. On top of that the battery swapping and 2-3 minute GPS lock on times means you really need to stay on top of it. Virb will track laptimes but it's just not reliable, and sometimes just doesn't work.

AIM Solo 2 DL with SmartyCam is a set it and forget it. It is hooked into vehicle power and CANBUS and it activates when you go over X MPH/RPM (your preference). The Rendering is all done at record time so you pop the card out / slice up the video if you want and watch it. I record at 720p/60fps. It's about 1-1.5 GB a session of 20-25 minutes.
