I would strongly recommend anyone buying a MPE, or replacing it, make sure they get the updated version with the stress holes. It is an AWESOME sounding exhaust and looks good to; however, dealing with the cracks on the older version was a major pain in the rear.
Thanks for the update! Excellent news.

I have not seen cracks on my first generation but have any of you had issues with cracks elsewhere? I am thinking my exhaust clamps are a little loose as the exhaust is getting louder in the mid section. Will need to get under there to make sure it is just that and not a crack in the pipe.

Well mine finally cracked. Just had it replaced under warranty but it was replaced with the same version without the holes. I guess they must have a supply of old ones still. Hope they warranty this one if it crackes the same way.

I got mine replaced a couple of weeks ago and got the updated version. I'd go back and see what they can do for you.

Interesting, I've had mind for over four years, and no issues whatsoever. I had mine shipped from NA.

People on here are having issues because most of them are going catless and old MPE can't handle all the pressure coming off the engine without the cats. If you have this old MPE with full cats, you wont have any problem.

I've been catless for the last year or so ...

Not true. My car was completely stock other than the MPE and it cracked...

Only performance mod on mine is dinan air filter and it cracked. I think it may be temperature related as well as I drive mine year round and I assume if you drive it hard and get the exhuast gases hot and then it cools quickly in winter, this probably fatigues the metal along with the fact it is thinner at that point.

I assume if you are in warmer climates, maybe the temp diff is not as much an issue.

Completely false. BMW wouldn't have redesigned the part, covered countless warranty claims and put out a revised MPE if there wasn't an underlying problem (which of course is the very thin cross section material subjected to repeated thermal stress cycling resulting in fatigue failure cracking). The redesign altered the former stress concentration (i.e. redistributed the stress distribution during thermal expansion and contraction cycling). This is a good product study case for a Strength of Materials/Machine Design junior level Mechanical Engineering degree course.

Not false buddy...BMW did redesign it for weak quality; however, most of the folks on this forum wont have an issue with old muffler if they stay stock other than MPE. Ask every single person on this forum who had the MPE and check how many got it crack while being stock..also don't forget to count who bought it used (and don't know the history whether the previous owner was catless or not)...numbers are extremely low man.

I personally seen many people with old MPE and the don't have any issues with it. You are always going to see the bad reviews ..

Not good, seen quite a few over here in Europe as well.
Either replaced or repaired if out of warranty.

Not sure if the new design helps with cracking issue?

Add me to the list...

Both sides, will post pics soon.

JetBlack - they covered yours under warranty? My dealer is giving me crap since I bought the car with the MPE already on it, but that was about 18 months ago.

It's only been 4 months but it's been fine so far.

Sorry, Robario, that sucks... Yeah, they covered mine under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty because it came on the car when I bought the car new from the dealer. So the warranty on the MPE would have expired when my car warranty expires. With this new one, the warranty on it is 2 years from installation date.

This is what the BMW states online "*M Performance parts carry the New Vehicle Limited Warranty if they were installed prior to delivery to the client. If the installation is made after the retail sale of the vehicle, the accessory will be warranted for the balance of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period or two years from its date of installation, whichever is greater."

Do you have any receipts from the previous owner's purchase of the MPE?

I purchased and installed it myself. I needed to show proof of purchase. Mine was within 2 years of purchase and my new car warranty is still good so it was covered. Only issue is that it was replaced with same version. I wonder if any of the new versions have cracked?

Make sure you protect the bumper area as the exhaust is a bit awkward to put in place.

Other tip is sliding the pipe in was a bit difficult on one side. Either need a pipe expander to spread it a little or a file to get a rounded edge so you can push it in.

Does anyone have a new part number for the new revised MPE? Or is it listed under the same previous nimber?
