Yep, on climate: Sth Central TX is but hot in summer. Why retirees are moving into the Hill Country.

And yep on CA. Lovely State but has issues ... TX's popn has grown from ~ 20m in 2000 to 24m+ in 2008. And the influx has accelerated lately w/ the economy and its asymmetrical impact.

Good place to live: and not from here.

I always had a prejudice against TX...just didn't like it for some reason.

TX was nothing like I expected. The state overall is really diverse. It seems like the worst thing you have to deal with on a daily basis is an illegal mexican who works his/her a$$ off to make a living. I'd take that any day vrs what you have to deal with where I grew up.

I hated Philly...I couldn't go into certain neighborhoods because I am Korean. Don't really that that problem in TX.

Yeah, pretty much everyone who has not lived here has a prejudicial view on TX. That's fine, as it's growing despite that!

I have 4 hard working Latinos refurbishing our irrigation system on our land this week. Glad to have them: they work!

Surprised about your comment on Philly (like the city). But yes, TX is welcoming and was built on immigrants w/ "can do" attitude. As The Economist said in a survey, if you want to see a vision of the US in several decades (mix etc) then TX is a model.

Reit: not from here and never lived here before this decade: like it, and not what most people outside think about the State Really friendly. I lived in Manitoba where the 'plates say "Friendly Manitoba' TX was way more welcoming in my personal experience than MB.

Last, 'W' did us a disfavor as I have had to disabuse my ex-U.S. relatives of their prejudice re TX based on his tenure in office.

that's just pretty much the gist of it. most people don't really have a reason to hate texas except for envy. we've got lots of land, low cost of living, nice people, beautiful, diverse, changing scenery, and probably the highest GDP of any state after this year. i always love hearing someone's texas stereotype thinking that we're all a bunch of wild west redneck cowboys because the majority of the texas population really are urban 'city folk.' although, admittedly, it is nice to have the luxury of being able to get away into the country and relax whenever you want.

besides, where will the californians go when their state files for bankruptcy?! texas, of course!

Yeah, that's what scares me. I sure as hell don't want them coming to TX and screwing it all up.

Heh, I did a search for Lubbock and here I am. I lived in TX straight out of school. Lewisville and then Plano (Dallas suburbs). Wife got her degree from UT-Almost (Arlington).

Which brings me to today. I'm getting moved to hell. Well, nearly hell anyway: Carlsbad, NM. Unfortunately the oil boom means housing is f'd to the up. I'm likely going to have to do some commuting from Hobbs until I clear the wait list on the three apartment complexes that meet my needs. We're looking at renting a house in Lubbock for my wife (SW part of town down by Wolfforth). Wondering how the area is? Trulia seems to show it's safe (she'll be walking our two small dogs from time to time). I'll commute on the weekends from whatever hole I'm staying in to Lubbock to be in "civilization".

Midland was the other option, but it's full on oil boom as well.

Can't imagine running the M3 into the ground so I'm thinking of picking up a 328d (maybe the sport wagon). 700 mile range is appealing when you have a 140-ish mile/day commute.
