It's nothing BMW could fix, it's the general amperage that goes into every USB 2.0 port that exists.

I have 2 WD passport drives (160 gig and 250 gig) and neither of them work. I have also tried a friend's Maxtor drive ... and again no go. These were all 5400rpm drives. It seems from the trials of the E90 owners that slower drives (4200 rpm) are more likely to work, but these are not easy to find. |

Please forgive me if these questions sound silly, but I want to get a few things clear.
If I use a flash drive instead of my ipod nano (with the BMW ipod cable) there will be a noticeable diference in sound quality? Right? If I copy all my tracks from my itunes library to the flash drive, will Idrive recognise the AAC files and play them? |

Thanks Xcellere. I read on another thread that you were considering watching the boat containing your car come in to port. Now that would have been dedication to the cause

When I first heard about this flash drive option I was really excied, especially when you guys brought up the fact that the signal is digital and not converted and that the flash drives are so cheap. However, all of my songs right now are on Itunes, and it sounds like copyrighted songs can't be put on a flash drive.
I was talking to my brother in law about this since he knows electronics way better than me, and he sent me this article regarding some software that may be a fix for those of us with a lot of songs in Itunes. Let me know if any of you have had any experience in doing this. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9873241-7.html The pertinent part reads as follows: "DoubleTwist also recognizes and imports all iTunes playlists and will read instantly which ones are protected by digital rights management technology. The software automatically plays the song files in the background (sans volume) and re-records them as MP3 files so they can be transferred to any device. Note: DoubleTwist only does this for songs you own or are authorized to play in iTunes." Not sure if any sound quality in lost in the re-recording process. |

Maybe, but I'm coming from the position of already having all of these songs in iTunes. I suppose it's possible that the songs could be re-recorded as mp3's, put on a flash, and then sent as a digital signal to the car, and this may still sound better than the song being converted to analog by the ipod and sent to the car. Worth a try for those of us that have a bunch of Itunes songs. Going forward, I guess I need to be more careful where I buy my songs from.

An iPod formatted on a Windows PC will perform as an iPod and transfer the signal Digitally to the headunit. An iPod formated on a MacOS will perform as an iPod, but will only transfer a signal in Analog to the head unit. Correct, yes? |

MacOS is also capable of working on FAT32... actually most people use their flash drives in FAT32 because of the compatibility between systems. MacOS can read/write FAT32 but only read NTFS.

I'm pretty sure that's correct. I've never formatted my iPhone so I wouldn't know personally.
