Is my DCT really that slow?

So with just a few weeks of owning my M3(2011 10/10 production), I can say that I have not regretted my decision to leave the world of 5 series to come to the 3.

I noticed the other day that the shifts were really really slow. I would be on the gas, up shift and the car would easily take another 1000rpm before it would even shift. I changed the shift speed from 1-5 and that did not have an effect. I first noticed it when I pulled the lever at 4000 rpm under moderate acceleration and the car did not shift until over 5000. This happened for about 3 days and then disappeared.

I searched on this topic and did find many threads on the non-responsive shifts but the SIB's and threads seem to be for cars which had production dates much earlier than my car. I am was going to bring the car in and have them update to the 213e (or 231e) software but I was not sure if anybody else had seen this issue and had software updates to correct it.

Get the latest update from your dealer. I was having the infamous DCT lag the day I got my car but once I got the update it's completely gone. Complain of the lag and they should do the update no charge.

His car should be new enough to have "post-lag era" software though right?

OP, do you see this all the time, or only when the engine/transmission are not fully warmed up?

On my car, when the drivetrain is cold, the transmission is slower to shift. However, once everything is up to operating temperatures, the shifts are nearly instantaneous when I flick the paddle.

+1 Especially under hard throttle and S5 shift setting, shifting is immediate.

Cheers

Sounds like something is wrong. I'd bring it in. Even in the slowest shift setting, it's not anywhere close to being that slow.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

The temps were 50ish out side and the car was fully warmed up. I originally thought it could be a temp issue (too hot/too cold) but I was not driving the car hard and I was replicating it over and over again. I even shut the car off and let it sit for a bit and then went back out to the same resultes Like everyone else, when the car was new, I was switching the S(1-5) modes to try to find what the best setting for me when driving daily. I could clearly delineate when you were on S2 vs S5 but this was not the case when experiencing these issues.

Looks like it is time for a boring loaner.

Thanks for the responses.

Yeah definitely not normal - I've never been below s3 but I can't imagine shifts ever being that slow and, as others have said S5 shifts should slap you in the chest

Did you ever get a resolution to this?

Tonight I had similar slow shifting from 2nd to 3rd and up. Almost 1000rpm lag from the tap of the paddle/gear knob to engaging the next gear. Was never an issue before.

With the holidays and taking the wife's car in for work, I have not had a chance to take it in. I am going to schedule to bring it in this week or next week. I will post what the response was.

OP: I hope you can get this figured out soon and please keep us updated.

From my experience:
1: I orginally had a 2008 M3 w/DCT and there was an obvious lag. I experienced it numerous times and it could be dangerous if coming to a stop and then quick right on Red ahead of traffic. Transmission lag as it hunted for the right gear. I understand the software update would have corrected it had I kept the vehicle.

2. I bought a 2011 M3 w/DCT (EU Delivery and Build July 2010) and the DCT was fine from day one, no perceivable lag.

Got an '11 and have never had any issue except when first roll on cold mornings. That's usually only the first grab at 3rd. GL and hope you get it sorted out.

Haven't driven much since then, but car seems to be fine for now.

From a search, it seems that this has only occurred in cars that were being tracked and experienced overheating. But all I did was was a 30-40 min highway drive home.

It was wet out so I thought it might be related to DSC, but still had slow shifting in S6 with DSC off. At the time had no difference in shift speeds in S4 and above.

This happens to me every I often in my 11.5 I rectify it by changing it to automatic, letting it shift once and then switching it back. Not sure what causes this
