E9x Custom mirror project
When I first saw the E92 M3 I liked it, but not as much as I liked the E46 M3 back when that first came out. Large part of me felt the E92 M3 was over styled, but it grew on me quickly. Still had a few reservations regarding the mirrors though... didn't like the upper stalk that heads all the way back to the a-pillar, looked Ganador-inspired.
I felt the lower part of the mirror cover had too much 'fat' making the making the mirror look dumbo-earish, slightly oversized IMO. Goal is to lean it all out... 2 months into the project is when they began to resemble the idea I had in my head. These are plug moulds, built up with resin based materials and then shaved into the desired shape using a range of abrasives... A time consuming process and they're still far from complete... Thoughts/feedback/suggestions welcome. Will add pics as I get more work done |

Nicely done. Question - Did you consider aligning the angle of the upper part of the mirror cross section with the A pillar angle (essentially more of an obtuse angle if the vertex was at the leading front edge of the mirror. Does that do anything for the design or place constraints on the mirror motors cavity?

I planned on doing another design after this with a custom, narrower mirror glass, chopping the top of the mirror down about an inch, the limiting factor would then be the mirror motor, the mirror chassis would need a chop and the mirror motor would have to be adapted somehow... |

One of the small details that I love about the e9xM is the mirrors, to me, you've made them look like the f8xM. The mirrors and hood bulge of my m4 is what I dislike.
It's great that you are customizing them.

I've tried to pick out curves and lines from the bonnet down to the door, they've been made specifically with the E92 in mind. Oh and I agree re. the bonnet bulge... but I'm weird and don't see any of these as 'small details'... there's so much going on with complete components like a set of mirrors or headlights. These are big details to me! Just needed to explore this idea, the good thing is E9xM mirrors are easily available to us all on ebay, should this project fail that's where I'll end up Some more work done- changed one line drastically, and a few others here and there. Cut out more space for the mirror glass, primed the lot, painted the front face and the base black. |

Painted the backs bronze, with supposedly a matte lacquer... which looks more satin-gloss! Will have to redo these at some point.
Mirror glass in. Had genuine M mirror glass which I cracked while making these... turns out the non-genuine replacements are just vaguely shaped the same but not the same... they're a fair bit smaller all the way round, will have to sort that at some point. Happy for now though, it's getting there...

Great job! Clearly this isn't your first crack at this sort of custom bodywork
