Enlightened - A BayOptiks Experience

When I first purchased my car, it came with modified headlights by the previous owner. They looked great, but I had intermittent low beam issues due to aftermarket HID bulbs and the housings were a bit hazy (even after attempting to restore them). It didn’t bother me too much, but the bulbs started failing more and more often until finally the driver side bulb wouldn’t fire at all. I replaced the bulb with an OEM bulb and all was well again.

This success was short lived. The next time I washed my car, I noticed condensation in the driver side headlight. The next thing I knew, the bulb was failing again and I knew that the moisture was the culprit. I immediately opened the top cover and dried the headlight out with a hairdryer in hopes of saving the ballast. Luckily, the bulb fired right up again when it was good and dry, but I knew that I needed a long term solution.

The Bay Area has a lot to offer in terms of automotive specialists and shops, but I wanted to give BayOptiks a shot because they are fairly new and specialize in custom BMW headlight jobs. I contacted them and was able to drop my lights off immediately at their shop in Fremont. Originally, I just wanted to do a re-seal since my headlights were already modified with custom LED angel eyes and blacked out housings, but after speaking with BayOptiks, I decided to do a couple of “while the headlights are open” modifications that I normally wouldn’t have done. I ended up going with gunmetal painted turn signals, amber LED delete, ZKW clear lenses, Osram CBB (Cool Blue Boost) bulbs, and new plastic covers to replace my hazy original covers. I decided to keep my original halos as there was nothing wrong with them. They were upfront about the cost and downtime and were on schedule when it came time to pick them up. They even re-painted the previously blacked out housings and re-epoxied the rings because they were falling off (I had no idea); this extra work was done free of charge.

The result is simply amazing. The headlights look brand new with the new covers (I highly recommend this, no amount of wet sanding / clear coat / polishing can achieve this result). The clear ZKW lenses provide a sharp blue cutoff that is lightyears ahead of the OEM projectors, especially when complemented by the Osram bulbs. The CBB bulbs are rated at 7000k, but unlike cheaper alternatives, they provide higher light output than OEM and a more aesthetically pleasing color.

I will let the photos speak for themselves (iPhone photos only at the moment, I will work on getting higher quality DSLR photos and will update this thread when I do), but I highly recommend BayOptiks for this type of work. You will not be disappointed.

Perfect! Jeff is the man. I've had him do 2 sets of headlights for me and I push as many customers to him as possible. He's great to work with and obviously super talented at what he does!
