LCI taillights upgrade

Hi looking for some clarity on upgrading to LCI taillights. I have a 2008 model and BMW and few other vendors state my model requires footwell module replacement (+ $380 in addition to headlights). I spoke to EAS and they state its not necessary. They said just taillights with harness is needed and ofcourse coding.

Anyone with experience on this?

I sold some LCI's one time to a guy who said he couldn't get it to code in his car, so there may be some merit to the claim that some will require FRM replacement. There were so many revisions and variations of that module that I would imagine it would be hard to make the blanket statement that it will surely work. It may be worth installing the LCI's with your current FRM and see if it will code before replacing it.

I have an '08 and did not require anything other than the correct harness and coding when I upgraded to LCI tails. In addition, when I upgraded the reverse globes to LEDs, that required extra coding as the reverse globes in LCI tails are filament types.

Just needs to be coded. The footwell module is for those who do not have access to anyone who can code the car.

Dealership can do this right? How much labor/time is involved for install and coding?

Dealership can only do it if you have the FRM3 module. They can not code it with your current module. I was in the same situation as you with my 2007 335i. I purchased the complete lCI tail lights with updated FRM3 module. The dealership charged me 1hr labor with FRM3 installment/coding if I remember which was about 5 years ago. Expect about 2hrs labor to be safe. Or find somebody local to code for way much cheaper and save money without buying the FRM3 module and visiting the dealership.

I did this a few months back. All I needed was the tails, harness, and coding. Everything works. 2009 E92. Good luck

The 'coding' that everyone is referring to entails turning OFF the Warm/Cold Bulb checks & Error Reporting for ALL rear lights

Dealer cannot do this selective type of coding - need to do it yourself or have someone that knows how to do it for you...

correct, some cars have old frm's and shops with autologic can upgrade them to frm3. It all depends. I would take it in and if EAS states they can do it, they will not have a issue at all.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm buying an 08 sedan and I am doing the LCI upgrade. Would my build date tell me if I have the right module?

On the E90's, it should be a simple swap. You just need to reverse the order of the wiring harness. You also don't need to code the bulb out. A simple unplug of the battery will fix this.

This doesn't apply for E92's as far as I'm aware.

As long as its coded correctly you dont have to change the FRM

You are correct about the pin our siring needs to be swapped. I have never seen them work without coding though.
