Moving to Milwaukee (just changed)

I might be landing a job in Milwaukee which will have me there for about 18-36 months and then I'll move on. I'm trying to decide whether I should move my family. I think I'll like it. Road America is close...get to try some new tracks out. Plenty of ice hockey too.

How is the cost of living?

How are the public schools in general and how is crime in the area? I've seen some stats that would suggest that crime is somewhat higher but it is a city.

Is my assessment correct that home prices have fallen and likely bottomed out in the area?

Thanks!

Welcome to the midwest Live in Chicago, but Milwaukee from what I understand (and that ain't much) is pretty nice place. Head up there maybe a few times a year for Summerfest, which is just a big summer band party or to catch some baseball games. It's only about an hour away from Chicago and it does seem like prices may have bottomed, but that could be wishful thinking on my part. Road America's only a bit over an hour away and think Blackhawk would be the same and they're totally different tracks. It is a city and don't think crimes that bad, but the winters sure can suck... Good luck with your decision and hope to see out here

I love Milwaukee, went to college there. Enough stuff to do without the huge over crowded feel of a larger city. I lived downtown, and there we a couple areas you stayed away from, but all cities have that. The northern suburbs are a very nice place to live.

Good luck

Thanks! I think I'm due for a crappy winter. I haven't seen one in 16 years.

Good deal! I would potentially be on the north side of the city!

How terrible are the winters? I would guess that you get all of the lake effect snows?

How is Lake Michigan in the summer?

Snow is give or take. The eastern side of the lake gets the heavy lake effect snow that everyone hears about. In the four winters I spent there, almost every year we had one or two big snow storms that dropped 6-12 inches in 24hrs, but someting that would be almost all the snow we got all year. Jan and Feb are pretty cold due to the wind chill. Summers are great, nice and mild.

All depends on where you are going and what time of the day. Also depends on what you are used to. They were working on the I294 bypass when I was there and that caused problems but it was finally completed a couple years back. Overall I would say it is about average for a city of that size, nothing horrible, but nothing to write home about. My wife and I been out of the country the last couple years and we are hoping to head back there over christmas to hit up some the old bars and restaurants that we miss.

The suburbs of Baysore, Whitefish Bay, Cedarburg are all very nice.

My family and I are from Milwaukee and I lived there until 2002 when I turned 29 yrs old. I mainly lived in the Wauwatosa area which is the first burb directly west of downtown. I LOVED it. Great area which has a lot of neighborhood pride in it's different sections. We were near Wauwatosa East High School. The schools in Tosa are excellent, lots of parks, beautiful old neighborhoods for walks, VERY safe and convenient to everything.

I live just over the border in IL and work in downtown Chicago now. If I could swing it, I would move back tomorrow. It's the best place I've ever lived and all my family is still there so I'm back quite a bit. Milwaukee is a perfect size city imho.

If you have any more questions you can hit me up directly. I can probably offer you a lot more specifics if you'd like.

Good luck, I really think you'll be happy there.

Eric

Did an interview there today. It seemed like a nice town. I don't think I'll be driving down 145 through the city again any time soon. Lol

I see that Milwaukee has emissions testing. Is that just the OBDII scan or is it the sniffer as well. I might have to keep my 330 texas registered...I will probably keep my family in TX. If the job does pan out then I'll probably only be in WI for 12-18 months.

^Congrats!

When you're looking for a part of town to live in perhaps you should find a place close to a good BMW repair shop. Heh heh.

Sorry, couldnt help myself. Going to keep the 330?

Low blow! Lol.

I'm taking the 330 up there. At least Road America is relatively close.

Thanks!

Where around Milwaukee are you looking at?

Milwaukee is really nice East of the river, lots to do, etc. West of the river it starts to get shady, and thats where most of crime stats probably come from.

Road America is quite close (45min), I've been up there many times already, and I've only been here for a year.

Well, finally made it here sans my BMWs. 330 is sold and I hope to have my E90 M3 up here by July (llllllllooooonnnnngggggg story!).

Hope to run Road America and Autobahn one time and concentrate on drifting. I'll be flying down to TX occasionally to instruct.
