Is this a new sound? I'd take the intake and plenum off and check if the sound goes away. If it does, might be an air leak somewhere.

That sounds pretty normal for the most part. If this is a new sound, ok, but you need to be more specific; when did you first notice it, any recent work done, after a long road trip, etc.
Aside from the normal sounds of vanos, sounds pretty normal. |

Mine will make the same sound off and on again. I have no idea what does it, I even took it to BMW already and had them look into it and they can't really find anything. From what I could find in the forums other people that reported wines had loose pulleys from what I remember reading.

The one with the pulleys seem to be a different whine though, like a higher pitched sound. I believe it's been there since I got it at 65k miles and it has 68k now. I really only started noticing it recently and maybe I'm overthinking.
The only thing that was done to it were the rod bearings with Malek at MRF when it was at 66k and he says it's mechanically sound. Just wondering if everyone's engine sounds the same

Nice and clean engine bay OP. Except for the missing plenum bolt, probably where the whistling comes from...
Joke aside, doesn't sound much though in my ears but you obviously hear the difference better in real life. As Redd said probably worth to investigate the plenum more closely. Give it a search and you'll find several on the board who had small plenum leaks generating some whine, for instance at the hose connection. |

Thanks all!
There is a post here with the same exact sound https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1556949 (the 2nd video) Looks like Redd posted too with the same issue on this thread. Wondering if it's a pressing issue?

does it sound like a supercharger? i hear this sound with mine as well. i have heard it could be the power steering pump. tried flushing and changing the filter but it persists for me. might try the pump eventually.
