BMW to Axe Euro-Spec M760i's V12 In 2019?

Quote:
Were getting a feeling of dj vu as after learning about BMWs plans to temporarily halt production of the M550i in Europe, one more engine will allegedly become a victim of the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure. The situation is actually even worse than in the case of the 5 Series taking into account that while the biturbo 4.4-liter V8 will be tweaked to make it WLTP-friendly, the biturbo V12 inside the Euro-spec M760i / M760Li will bite the dust.

Since the new WLTP is not applicable in the United States, it should theoretically mean the V12 will solider on underneath the hood of the U.S.-spec M760i. The possible demise of the 6.6-liter engine could also imply there wont be a V12-powered X7, at least not in Europe. BMW Blog mentions installing a gasoline particulate filter would not be enough to make the engine clean enough to meet the more stringent regulations and it would also hamper performance. That being said, the one rumored to power the luxobarge could have a different specification (like it has been the case with the M550i / M5), though its too early to know.

Looking at the bigger picture, we cant help but wonder whether this will also have an impact on Rolls-Royce since the company is using more or less the same BMW engine.

While the V12 may be considered as being a dinosaur by some folks on the dawn of the electrification era, were sure many people will be sad to see it go. Maybe it wont be next year, but it will eventually happen.

That is okay. Bring us a new V10 (diesel?) and all shall be forgiven, BMW!

There was never going to be a V12 powered X7. No V12 8 Series either. So, it is not a surprise if the M760i is indeed in its twilight as well. If you read recent comments from Mercedes and Audi decision makers, you’ll see the writing is on the wall for their V12/W12 engines too.

The 12 cylinder engine will remain for Rolls Royce, Bentley, and presumably Maybach branded Mercedes vehicles. For now at least. And it will probably be outlived in those brands by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and a few boutique brands like Pagani. Those latter two source their engines from Mercedes, by the way, so the three pointed star may be one of the last manufacturers to see a V12 engine come out of its factories, probably sometime between 2020 and 2030.

The V12 from the Phantom and imminent Cullinan will derive a variant for the next series of Ghost. Which will find home in the 7er and the X7. But is no ordinary V12 engine.

Hmm, well I stand corrected then. It looks as though BMW will be going up against competitors with hybrid V8s though, like the VAG setup in the Panamera which is rumored to be headed to Audi next.
