I believe we are past the point of depreciation, I often check for sedans for sale similar to my own car and there are not many nice ones on the market but a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it or get a loan for.

These cars have been holding value but unless you plan to garage queen a rare low mileage individual slick top car that you buy off a little old lady below market value, probably not.
There will be collector E92s that sell for a lot of money. But the maintenance, insurance and gas you'll put in if you choose to drive it will chip away at that. It's a good car to own in that regard but if you want a $30k investment buy some TSLA.

I can't consider it a 'good investment' but if you're looking for a low priced performance car that you won't get hurt on when it's time to sell this is the platform. I do believe we are at or very near the point where they will hold their value and soon be at the point where they do begin to appreciate depending on condition.

Bought mine 7y/38k miles ago. Paid €47k and probably would still get €40k. Best car investment I've ever done so far. And good fun mean while.

I don't think any car is an investment unless it runs on steam and is made of copper and tin.

Your IRR is going to suck 😂
I'd say within an automotive framework of evaluation, sure - it's a good "investment" in the sense you will limit depreciation, maybe some appreciation eventually that will make you feel good about yourself & versus the wife while *only* having to float running costs. ... yet the inevitable will strike; the mod drug. TSLA did 700% this year. |

Mine is an investment in driving enjoyment. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to use up all the value in it.

Not a good investment with the idea of making money on appreciation as compared to other options.

Yeah, no car is a good investment. Even if the M3 appreciates in value, the cost of ownership is going to eat that up and then some. Factor in inflation on top of that, and the returns are even worse.
Buy the car because you want it and will enjoy having it.

The only way this car is an "investment" is if you compare it to a big new luxury sedan like an Audi A8 which will be in the 40% residual value range after 3 years of ownership.

IMO...the only car that would be consider an investment are the ones that Jay Leno collection garage or Jerry Seinfeld's many Porsches for example...ours are simply for pure Joy and Fun Factor. Just find the one you will be happy with paying for and enjoy it while you can!!! The Last natural V8 M3 with Hydraulic steering!!! Hard to beat the driver connection and intoxicating Music to our ears!!! To Me that equates the best investment for me from this E9x M!!!

For cars I like to ask people would you really do better than a basic index fund after all the running cost and insurance etc? Probably not unless you find a great deal on a car you can just flip quickly and not lose it all to taxes. |

Exactly. Cars are to be driven and enjoyed, not stored away to make 1k more than you paid.

I bought a 1969 Z-28 Camaro in 1971 with 18,000 miles on it for $2500 and sold it in 1976 with 98,000 miles on it for $3500, and has gone up and up! Not a bad investment and family car.

Not a great investment but it is oddly helping me save money. I used to switch cars often, but e9x m3 is such a great value for money I can no longer justify paying more for newer cars.

There has been a sharp rise in used sports car price in general last year, likely due to people traveling less and thus needing economical cars less -> more people buy fun cars!

Make a list of cars that have been good investments and then see if the E9x M3 could hold its own in that group.
My opinion is that it's a great fun car but appreciation? Probably not in the next 10 years. 20 years with low miles and the more desirable options? Perhaps but it seems like to much risk vs reward. |

What everyone else said.
"Good investment" compared to what? A new 7-series? Sure. Any decent robo-investing app or mutual fund? Definitely not. I suppose if you import a GTS or CRT or pay a premium for an ultra low mileage late model comp pack with rare spec, then keep it vacuum sealed in a climate controlled garage for a few decades, you may make a couple hundred grand. Personally I think these cars deserve to be driven while they still exist. My goal isn't to have the lowest mileage M3 around in 10 years, it's to have the highest mileage M3 that everyone looks at and says, "This car is so clean - I can't believe it has XXX,000 miles!" |
