Not sure we're referring to the same thing.

Ok, if you go back and read the thread Russski put up (which still does not qualify to be posted here), you won't see anything about an engine blown. The guy needed new TAs... and as far as that thread reveals, his car is fine now.

Russski, do you think a motor that experienced a failed TA that was eventually replaced is a blown motor?

From the third sentence of that thread - "Car currently has 116k miles but engine was replaced under warranty (rod issue) at roughly 50-60k."

We haven't seen any other rod issues causing engine failure, so it was probably bearing failure.

No thanks. $11,500 plus $10,000 for a used engine and some of your time more of your money to change the rod bearings in the new used motor and to do the engine swap? I could buy a good running M3 with fewer miles for less.

You can throw mine on the list:

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1565421

EDIT: This was fixed, but rod bearing failure and crank damage did occur.

A couple of failures this week.

Rod and main failure. Engine locked up with no warning according to customer. Crankshaft and Engine block were damaged beyond repair. We replaced his engine

Rod bearing failure. This had very minor rod knock that another local shop tried to fix by replacing the bearings with OEM bearings and bolts stating the journals looked fine. After that work the slight knock persisted around 3k rpm so the owner brought it to us. #1 rod bearing spun within 200 miles of being replaced. Aside from that very slight knock at 3k there were no other symptoms of failure.

Anything we should worry about with the mains after replacing with BE rb's? Or just ignore this and try to not stress as it's purely a bmw lottery..?

You can worry about your mains too! But to fix them is close to the cost of a new motor so its almost not worth fixing unless you have access to free labor. Most of us have decided to just roll the dice as the # of failures on mains are far lower and therefore more easy to stomach than on RBs.

Well my engine just blew so that sucks. Car was just inspected two days ago because I was selling it. Picked up from shop after an oil change. Drove two miles. Bang. Smoke. Dead.

Car had rod bearings replaced 10k miles ago. Waiting on further diagnosis but they said a rod blew through the engine.
