Overheat Error (2007 335i sport package)

I got a 2007 335i with Sport Package. Bought it since early 2007 and only recurring problem was the HPFP...but got it fixed a few times and it has been stable for over a year.
It is now at 93,000 miles and I recently have the "overheat" error message comes up. Does not matter if i am on local street or on the freeway, the overheat message would comes up. I pulled over and turned off the engine for a few minutes then it is okay again.
Have anyone out there experience similar issue? could it be the thermostat sensor is not working? Some help would be greatly appreciated.

(Oil change recently! Status is all Green on the display.)

Thanks all....

tq in N54 is superior to S65 anyday!

anyway though, back to the topic...

07s do not come with an oil cooler. If you've been driving hard/driving in hot climates...yes your engine will encounter limp modes.

Have your engine checked for carbon build up, perhaps do a seafoam/tune up.

And then buy a stett oil cooler

+1 and there's also a service bulletin to have the dealer retrofit the oil cooler unit free of charge.
