first M3 purchase questions.

hey, hoping for some advice. I've read most of the posts on what to look for before buying but I don't remember anything about around idle at start up. is this normal?

Not sure exactly what you're asking, but mine is loud as hell for about a minute after startup (aftermarket catback exhaust) then it quietens down considerably.

its called the "cold start cycle." basically, the engine runs a little rich and i think it retards the timing a little bit to heat up the catalysts faster to reduce emissions. its normal, and lasts for about 30 seconds.

u ever cold started an AMG, RS/R, other M cars, Porsche Boxer engines or any exotic car lineups?
It idles higher than normal on purpose to prevent from stalling + force richer air/fuel ratio mixture into cylinders.
In fact, all cars do it. It's just more prominent in high performance cars with "louder", more free flowing exhaust.

Hey, I appreciate the quick response. I haven't had the pleasure of starting up any high-performance vehicles and only E46 Ms and I don't remember it sounding so rough and... What I'd call harsh? After about 30 seconds it did seem to smooth out. But I was concerned because my Z does the same thing (allbeit much less severe) and occasionally has some idle issues that no mechanic has been able to diagnose in 5 years.

Totally normal for these cars. There are software options out there that supposedly remove this, but what you're describing is normal.

It's for the sole purpose of reducing emissions by getting the cats up to temp faster. Nothing to do with stalling. Cold Start removal is a common option with most tunes.

Yes, it should scare you when it starts. Especially with an exhaust. When I bought mine, the first time my wife heard it, she thought something was wrong.

I love cold starts, I never understood why someone would want to delete it.

some of us DD our m3, and also leave for work early in the AM. in this case cold start is not ideal for family/neighbors.

I DD mine, have aftermarket exhaust and live in a condo complex. My neighbors tell me they always know when I leave for work in the morning .
