f80 clocked at 176mph

This car was first detected on a highway that splits the city limits of Portland and a crowded suburb. It’s a very congested stretch of road. I guess someone had a tune (speed limiter removed). Ay yi yi this is fast.

Yikes, young Milo Schneider is flirting with certain death doing that on the public Highway in and around traffic. Perhaps he was thinking he lived in Germany. "Schneider told deputies he had pushed the speedometer up to 183 mph at one point during the drive, according to the sheriff’s office." The S.C.C.A. & P.I.R. are better places for him (and other teenagers) to stretch their legs in a safer environment IMO. But 176-183mph is insane on a public highway in America. Oregon's Interstate 5 ain't the Autobahn nor the Nurburgring. Crazy.

Hell, an E46 M3 will hit 170mph stock. (The speed limiter doesn't apply to 5th gear.)

Take a while to get there, of course, but people have done it.

"When you’re going at that speed, you’re going to hit something and someone’s going to die,” he said."

Hmmmm I would say the speed limits in America are an utter joke. In my home country the speed limit on the highway is 90mph and people generally drive at 110-120mph cruising.

If you have driven in the US, you would see that most drivers are having a hard time at 60 mph. They go 60 in the left lane. They don’t check their rear view mirror. They don’t go the right to let people pass. They eat lunch, do their makeup and use one hand to talk on their phone while driving. But you can’t get upset with them because they might pull out a gun and shoot you. It’s the greatest country on earth. You are free to do whatever you want, however stupid, inconsiderate, or dangerous it might be.

Your point is well taken. I’d counter that our roads around urban areas aren’t built for those types of speeds but certainly out away from population centers 60-75 mph is a little silly in a modern car…..until a deer crosses in front of you.

My days of driving that fast on public roads are long gone but at least when I did it no one was around and when I did pass a cop I wasnt stupid enough to let him pull me over. This kid will definitely be made an example of despite all the real crime that is going on in Portland

I live in the U.S.
The problem is that police do a shit job and only pull over people speeding 99% of the time. If courts started processing tickets for impeding traffic in the left lane, then people would clean up their shit quickly. If I was a cop, I'd give tickets for everything except those driving faster.

I don’t think everyone driving faster in the US is capable of driving faster safely. You don’t need much more than a pulse to get a license. It would be great if those who have been to advanced driving schools were authorized to go faster, but the problem is the mass of bad drivers they would have to navigate through. So we need lowest common denominator rules. And unfortunately the lowest common denominator is pretty low. There is no appetite to change that — educate people, teach people, inform people, improve people’s skills. Plus, if speed limits were higher, we might have to upgrade our crumbling infrastructure to make higher speeds safer and that would be expensive. The rich and the big corporations don’t want higher taxes.

Speed limits on European highways exist in populated areas, even on the Autobahn. They are generally monitored by speed cameras.

A few weeks back, I watched some chick in her honda fit who was intentionally slowing traffic down in the left lane take a plastic bottle of water to her windshield a few weeks back for causing traffic backup. I actually slowed down to applauded the guy who did it. Can't f'n stand these people especially since NJ highways have signs saying left lane is for passing only.

Glad that pic is 11 years old and not last night! Did you have any peddle left? For my western friends that’s 189 mph. With the over estimate of the speedometer, actual speed probably around 175-180mph.

In all fairness, the U.S. is stuck in 1970s with regard to its speed limits.

This is one that has always driven me nuts. We set the speed limits back when the capabilities of the average car were orders of magnitude lower than they are today.

How well did the average 70s car accelerate, brake, steer, handle compared to today? How good are 1970s tires compared to today's tires? There's just no comparison. You couldn't even argue safety. Which would feel safer? A crash at 60mph in a 1970s car vs a crash in a modern day car at 80mph?

While I can see the argument by not raising some city speed limits, freeways on the other hand are a no brainier. 80 should be the new 60, and then of course you do 10 over the posted limit that which gets you to 90. I'd be totally happy if I could cruise at 90.

Most of the non car people I talk to don't want the limits raised, and they all seem to have the same reason: Most people suck at driving, and allowing them to drive faster would be disastrous.

I am 100% against raising the limit. Most people suck, and as a country we don’t have the self discipline that Germany does.

Now if we want to invest in making licenses a more substantial demonstratt of skill and more importantly knowledge and a strict adherence to those rules. I could get behind it. But at least 1/4 of Americans are f’ing morons.

I’m all for using GPS to enable “governors” in car to isolate speed zones especially in towns and residential zones.

True but how many of those are verified by gps, just because the Speedo says 190 doesn’t mean that’s how fast your going no?

Modern speedos(especially in this caliber of vehicle) are very accurate.
