Rough Idle And a LOT of Vibration After Oil Change
I'm sorry in advance if this is in the wrong place.
I had my oil changed in my 09 E92 M3 by a shop I don't normally use and after the change the car started vibrating (more than usual) on the drive home. I thought it may be a drivetrain issue, or imbalanced wheels etc. but when I parked the car and gently accelerated while in neutral, the car began to shake rhythmically and run really rough and it is certainly RPM sensitive. The higher the RPM the more violently the car shook. I'm wondering if they overfilled my car?? Engine mounts?? The car also has new plugs all around. Has anyone experienced this sudden change? Any help is appreciated. ![]() |

What oil was used? No I've never had an issue like this after an oil change. If the car was over filled it would pop up on the dash & display after operating temp was reached. You said the plugs were changed……did they screw up one of the coils maybe? Or did they not click in one of the connectors on one of them fully?

Oil is at Max (Liquimoly Race Tech GT1 10w60)
Plugs were done AFTER the change (I assumed that was the problem and needed new plugs anyway.) I'm thinking it's likely a plug/coil pack issue but it's running like it has a vacuum leak so I'll check that next once the weather clears. Fingers crossed it isn't the driver's side plug against the firewall. Packs are good. Zero warning lights. I'm having it towed to my usual indy to figure out what it is and change out the mounts to some 80A Revshift mounts. I'll update after hearing what they say. Thank you for all the suggestions. ![]() |

Yeah I can't imagine why it isn't throwing codes with the way it's running. I just know there's only so much I can do without a lift in Massachusetts in Dec so this time I'll have to send it out. Hoping it's not rod bearings.

Did you actually read the error codes or are you just talking about not seeing a CEL?

Update: Replaced the mounts, (old mounts were fine surprisingly) and checked every subframe and trans bolts as well as all the plugs and packs. Re-torqued everything to spec. The car isn't throwing a CEL and when I read live data and search for codes the values are all normal when driving and at idle. No misfires or rough idle but I still have the vibration that is RPM specific. Worse when driving over 2000rpm or so but it does the same at idle. I can feel most of it in my seat/center of the car and there's a faint noise as if something is off balance and slightly thumping something else. Driveshaft? Carrier Bearing?

Would that affect the car when it's in park or neutral? I'll have to check the guibo and the bearing as well as the fuel pump next. Thank you all again for the ideas

If you would like our shop in located in mendon. We specialize in the E9X. We would be happy to take a look for you. Definetly not drive shaft related if it's happening while sitting at idle. It sounds more like something is rubbing somewhere. I was going to say oil pan could be sitting on sway bar but you said mounts were just replaced. Either way we would be happy to take a look for you. Call or text the shop 4012179833

Super Late Update: It was the Motor AND trans mounts. Replaced with Revshift 80 A mounts all around. The car is super tight and I actually love the more raw feeling the solid mounts give. Only a little vibration at idle and slight vibrations around 2000rpm for a moment while accelerating but smooth otherwise. I did notice that when I got the car back it began throwing a servotronic code and I lost my power steering. Could this just be the connection in the drivers-side wheel well? My battery is also a little low. Would this cause a full loss of power steering? Thank you everyone for all of the help. I love this car and it just hit 153,000 miles.
