BBS LMs - Curb Rash - Fixable?

Noob here. Yes I curbed it. Yes I'm irate. I've never curbed any of my wheels until this day. Stupid narrow drive-thru lane. I even checked before I entered but I guess not good enough.

How bad is this and is it fixable? I get the sand down and polish it out part but what about the deep gashes? Is there a way to fill it in with aluminum (dumb question sorry lol) or am I going to have to just sand/file it down and even it out with the rest of the lip.

The goal was to always polish out the lips and have the centers painted in BBS gold so I guess this incident will hasten that.

Front Passenger Wheel - my eff up.

As angry as you are today, it will be lessened by half as each day passes. I agree that it sucks though, sorry it happened.

Thanks Boof,

I went thru the emotions of mad then sad lol. Now I'm just trying to find a fix and how much it will cost to do. Wish I had IND or SupremePower down the street :*( My area doesn't have many reputable shops to get this fix and I'm super anal on who touches my car lol.

Wait, isn't this a 3-piece wheel? If so, replace that piece with a brand new one. Way cheaper than a new wheel and no gambling with shoddy repairs.

A good wheel repair shop can weld and fix that, yes, but I would just replace that piece.

BBS LMs are a 2 piece wheel (barrel and face).

The shop can sand down those rash marks. You may have a couple lips that look shaved down a little more than the others, but the rash will be gone. They won't fill these

Where are you located in Florida? I know of two shops in the St Pete area.

I had a similar incident with my LM-R a few years ago and ended up fixing it myself. It sucks, but your best option is to sand it down smooth and then polish it. That's what a shop would do anyways, albeit likely shave down the entire lip around the wheel to make it all even.

I'm located in Pensacola, Boof. Far from down south.

Guess my only option is to just sand it down and lose some of the lip after it's been even out. I don't want to get new barrels unless they're official BBS.

That type of damage is not worth replacing imo.

Yes sanding it down will not be 100% but you'll have to be pretty close to tell.

This was a pic of my used curbed LMRs that I fixed when I got them. This portion of the lip had silver paint and not a machined finish like on the face of the lip.

Yes it is totally repairable.

I had LMs on my GTI and let someone drive my car and it came back with some nasty curb rashes. A good wheel repair shop should be able to fill in the missing pieces then sand it smooth.

I'd find out what a competent repair shop will charge (and how much of the damage they can reasonably fix), then compare to the cost of a new barrel.

It will come down to this: are you willing to accept it looking "okay" from a distance for maybe $150, or are you willing to pay for perfection for way more?

Unfortunately BBS doesn't sell barrels separately for their street wheels. He would need to get a whole new wheel or repair. Parts for BBS Motorsports E88 (or E05) are readily available but not for the LM, LM-R, etc. E88 lips are also polished aluminum (without a clear coat) and can be easily repaired and polished to original condition.

OP - The lips of the LM have a clear coat. Be careful to only sand the edge in order to avoid messing up the clear coat.

Thanks for the replies. Still trying to find a reputable shop around here. I'd like to have the lips/barrels all 100% from factory but doubt I'm able to keep that up for the life of the wheels. Not trying to replace a barrel every time I'd accidentally curb it which is rare in itself.

I'll go the sand and polish look unless the new barrels at BBS are similar in price.

Edit ^^ rip. figured it'll be hard to get anything from BBS readily avail let alone just a barrel.

Thanks,

There is no such thing from the BBS street division. They won't sell you barrels. BBS USA would love to but they can't get BBS Japan to provide Barrels.

I think you can sand them to a near new appearance. My concern would not be about the gashes. It would be the clear coat.

As Slicer mentioned, BBS has a nice random finish which would be pretty hard to match from any shop. Fix as small portion as needed or else that one wheel will be so mismatched compared to the other 3!

Agree. Other than that, try to sand it down, polish it up and live with it.

If you can't, get a new rim or - if you can get your hands on one - a new lip.

Really? That's disappointing to hear. I always thought that was one of the benefits of a multi-piece wheel -- repairs don't require an outright replacement.

Yes, it's an unfortunate fact about the BBS road wheels. However, that is a 2 piece wheel and the rim/barrel portion is fully forged in Japan. The strength of that rim is second to none. The lips and barrels of a typical 3 piece wheel are not as strong but they can be replaced. As I previously mentioned, BBS motorsports 3 piece wheels - E88, E05, E07, etc (separate department and all parts are made in Germany) are sold by the piece. In other words, we can custom specify the width, offset, and brake clearance by picking the parts we want. Plus we can order any one of those parts separately at any time as BBS Motorsports USA stocks most of the parts. I have never actually needed to order lips or barrels due to damage or bend as they have proven to be very durable in my experience. I have however ordered parts to change the spec of an existing wheel. Lastly, the E88 lips are polished and have no clear coat, which makes them super easy to repair if scratched.
