Just took mine in today... SA said "Could be the exhaust"... I said "Probably not." I may forward him this thread and have him call your people. What dealership is your car at Pilot?

To assure you guys if your dealer does a good job with replacing the main bearings your car will be as good as new!
My car's main bearings got replaced at 5k miles and now the car is ~8k miles no ticking at all! |

THAT is the $64,000 question, my friend . I'd make sure my car wasn't a guinea pig. If it has been done before, chances of full success are much higher. Still can't believe this is happening to owners of brand new cars, after 3+ freaking years of production. Unbelievable. Mine can be affected too as it has the 'old' bearings. But even new ones are failing . I feel for you guys. No more complicated cars for me after this. |

Truly though, as a former owner of 335i (with HPFP problems), I really hate to say it but I am used to this BS a little bit. If it's the bearings, then so be it. If there is a problem, then it needs to be fixed. My concern is how long the car will sit there at the dealership. At least I have the loan with me for now but I am growing a little tired of this... |

Yup... Anything but rhythmic. It's repeatable, but not linked directly to RPM. As I said in a previous post, I talked to a LONG time BMW mechanic, and he said bearing noise is generally loud knocking and far more obvious than ticking at low revs.

Talked to my service advisor this evening... They said they fixed the clicking. They said a pan was rattling against the exhaust heat shield. They fastened it with some new rivets and they say the noise is gone. Hmmmm. I'll let you guys know how it turns out tomorrow.

M3 Clicking Noise
I picked up my car after it sat at the dealer for a week. Apparently, they dropped the subframe, removed the oil pan and tightened some plate. It has only been a day and I have yet to hear the clicking noise. For those of you who had the same problem please pm me and let me know your results. Thanks!

My Car is about a week behind..... They are just starting tear down.... Im not holding my breath.. What they are actually doing is loosening and retightening the main bolts... So my question is if it was done wrong the first time and i now have 6,xxx Miles.... I would guess my bearings would be toast, BMW really thinks thats the best bet... Not even checking the Bearing?
GOOD LUCK to the other owners in the boat with us.. M3Pilot09 Sounds like you have got your car back first so let us know if it comes back.. I got my fingers crossed for you! |

I am just trying to understand how the improperly torqued part is leading to a ticking sound from the engine bay. I will admit that it does sound similar to the exhaust cooling, which is due to thermal expansion. What I am having trouble with is how this particular noise is related to thermal expansion as it has to be related in some way to the rotation/vibration of the engine.
I guess if it is over-torqued, the vibration could cause the material of the plate (or whatever the part is) that is near the bolts to experience a localized stress that results in a noise similar to cooling metal. Does anybody have schematics/drawings of this area under the motor? Last edited by NeoE46; 10-17-2010 at 10:39 AM.. Reason: Spelling |

Wow....Sorry to hear other's are having that issue. The YouTube link referenced in one of the first responses was my 08 M3. I went through two of them and finally got an 09 that did not have the problem. It was the main bearing. I am surprised it is still happening on 09+ cars as they changed the bearings. I now almost have 20K miles on my car w/o any ticking. I'll have to recheck.

This is why i said its weird they aren't at least checking the main bearings..Really the noise is probably always there but the thick oil muffles the sound till it thins out and starts ticking like a damn time bomb so not really a heat thing like a cat cooling.. The wait is killing me, anyone with there car back have any news? |

I got mine back... see post above. They didn't fix shit. Said it was a loose exhaust shield or something. Taking it back this Thursday.

M3 Clicking Noise
Ok you guys have me concerned. I picked up my car Friday, October 15th. The dealer said they dropped the subframe and tightened some bolts on the plate below the oil pan and put in fresh oil. The noise seemed to be gone until I read some of your post above. I just came in from the garage and listened to my engine for about 15 minutes (it was already warm) I can hear a faint clicking noise. I wonder if this is the bearings??? I am so irritated with the current M3. On top of this my prior M3 which was a 2008 E90 M3 died on the 405 freeway at 80 MPH due to the alternator freezing. I truly am over the current M3. My 2011 ZCP ticking time bomb coupe is my 9th M3 and I am about to switch models in the BMW lineup. I love the M3 but, we should not be experiencing issues like several of us seem to be having.
