This is my original reference:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476105

My steps went something like this:
Remove peeling finish if you can
Remove M sticker
Sand with low grit (80ish) increasing to 100 then 200
Spray with Rustoleum camouflage black (flat black) 2 - 3 coats
Sand with 400, 600, 800
Wet sand 800
Spray another coat
Wet sand 800
Very light final coat

I did this today and want to report that is works amazing. Very happy with the results. The worst part is sanding off the old paint. Other than that the camo black firms up really quick.

Looks good, is the finish rough or relatively smooth after painting?

I added a sand with 2000 before final coat and it's fairly smooth. Extremely close to stock.

Mine is still holding up and it is 8 years later.

I think there is a different paint that one can get which is closer to the "soft touch" OEM. I believe that SEM or similar automotive paint catalog is who you would look into. Can't speak to firsthand use but I remember reading about it and thought I would drop a note here.
