OEM Mod options

I'm picking up a stock exhaust,I currently have a RKP Sport xpipe with HFC's, and a Dinan exhaust. I'm looking for something a little louder, you guys think the OEM mod would do it? If so, should I do the 2.5 mod or the 4 pipe?

I was in the same boat that you were. I was debating on going with a full exhaust and paying $$$ or going with a modified stock exhaust. I heard a few sound bites of the 2.5 mod (but never in person)... and I heard the 4 pipe mod on YT and in person and pulled the trigger on the 4 pipe mode..

For once in my life I made the right decision...(sorry hun) the 4 pipe mod sounds perfect for what I was looking for. You wont be disappointed...

As for me, I am now comfortably sleeping on the couch with the dog..

Ok cool, sounds like the 4 pipe mod it is! Did you wrap them or cut out the perforated sections and weld in new pipe?

To me the OEM mod is on par with meisterschaft GT or Eisenmann race. Your x pipe with either the 2 or 4 pipe will be much louder than the dinan (which is a sport muffler to me, on par with a Eisenmann sport or akra).

If and when you do it please post some videos!

Hey just to be clear... to Blinds point, I do NOT have the X-pipe as part of my setup with the 4 pipe mod. I think that would be too loud for Me.

To answer your question, I did not do the work myself. I had the car up at ACM on the East Coast for rod bearings... and they did the work. The actually swap out my system and replace it with something that is already modified. If you do a search on this site, you'll see and hear some clips...

The Dinan is your issue. Keep the RKP, get ANYTHING else and you'll be much louder. I wouldn't recommend the OEM mod, but even that mod will make it louder regardless.

Why not the OEM mod? Too loud?

I've always found any of the OEM (2 pipe or 4) to be not nearly as loud as pretty much any aftermarket exhaust system. Like someone said up above, sounds like an eisnemann or other 'refined' exhausts.

If you want LOUD, go for a borla, remus, active, magnaflow, RPI (if you can find it anymore). A lot of 'cheaper' exhausts sound a lot louder then some more euro centric exhausts.

I mean...it's all subjective, but the RKP will help with the OEM mod I think and probably give you the perfect mix since you said "little louder" and not "obnoxious loud".

Ok, yeah not looking for crazy loud just a tad more than the Dinan has.

The things that makes this hard are a) huge variance from the mid-pipes, b) loud to one person is quiet to another, and c) tone is super personal.

Prior owner of my car did test pipes and ACM 4pipe, and the cold start was obnoxiously loud...to the point you could not carry on a conversation standing near the back of the car. And it's loud enough at 75 on the highway that you have to talk over it...no drone, just loud. That said, tonally it sounds FANTASTIC!

I came across a used Dinan mid-pipe (4 resonators) and bought it to lower the volume a decibel or 2...which it did, but it is still loud enough that I have the loudest car in my suburban neighborhood. Tone is still great, but I decided to buy a Dinan muffler to drop a few more decibels and find out how the full Dinan system tone sounds in comparison. Hoping to put it on this weekend.

Worst case, the Dinan muffler is "too quiet" for me and I put the 4pipe back on...and find someone to code out the obnoxious cold start

Good luck!

I had the Dinan race xpipe (catless 4 resonators) with my Dinan mufflers, it sounded good, but the exhaust fumes were just too much, that's why I switched to the RKP sport (2 high flow cats and 2 resonators), that quieted down the Dinan. It still sounds good, just want a little louder but with good tone.
I go back and forth if I should do the 2.5 mod or the 4? Afraid the 2.5 won't be much different than the Dinan snd worried the 4 pipe mod might be too much. Ugh!

I think the ACM will be way too much. Do the 2.5. It's plenty loud. I think the delta between the 2.5 and 4 pipe is negligible.

So replace the 2 full perforated or wrap them, and wrap 1/2 the other 2 smaller perforated pipes??

The two big perforated ones are what I would replace with solid piping. Wfdeacon answers the 2 vs 4 well. I have his old OEM mod that was the 2 pipe (or 2.5) and it's plenty loud. With an x pipe I was worried it would be too loud (so I am getting akra rear and challenge sport x pipe myself).

I have the OEM 2 pipe with test pipes and it's plenty loud, when cruising there is no drone and it is quiet. As soon as you rev it out it becomes very loud on the outside and sometimes makes me hold back from ripping it(I dont want to be that guy that made you go deaf because i downshifted next to your car), but I think it sounds great. Below 4k the exhaust is smooth and howls and above 4k it gets raspy and raw sounding(like a BMW should).

This is the test pipes with the OEM 2 pipe mod for reference.
(go to 7:25 for the exhaust sounds)

I think I'll do the 2.5 then. Sounds like the 4 pipe might be a bit much.

I thought generally the OEM mods don't pair well with anything that removes primary cats. With HFC... Maybe?

Man so many different opinions on this! Lol ! Makes me question if I should do it or keep the Dinan, or sell it for something else.

listen to the videos, if that doesn't sound good to you then you know what you'll like and don't like.

yeah, 4 pipe just opens the door to drone. The 2 pipe is a good place to start.
